A really pristine Riley Elf has just popped up on BaT.   The market for these is more limited than that for the regular Mini body style but this one looks very sweet and has an excellent auction presentation.

The elf got some serious respect.  Sold for an incredible $41,500.   Wow.

Rule of thumb for me is 20% less for an Elf than a standard Mini. The boot puts a lot of first time Mini buyers off.

This one broke the mold for sure.

A Mk I Cooper S, originally delivered to California when it was brand new, is now on BaT.  And offered at no reserve!   I think this might go pretty darn high.

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1966-austin-mini-cooper-s-10/

Not everyone was comfortable with the sheetmetal repairs or the history of this Mini.  And that seemed to be reflected in the low Ė for Mk I Cooper S - winning bid of $35,000.

A refurbished 998 automatic is on BaT.   The drivetrain is not the most desirable so I canít imagine it going for more than $10,000.

So this car was very similar to my first Mini in 1972. I bought it for $1000 and sold it for $1500 5 years later. I wonder what it would have cost me to maintain it for 50 yearsÖ

HOLY CRAP.  On two counts:

1) the top bid was an astounding $16,000!  (For a 998 slushbox Mini!?!?)

2) The auction went Reserve not Met (!) at that bid.  Seriously, WTF?  Reserve is higher than $16K!?!?

Now a VTEC Mini has popped up on BaT.

Itís a lot more understated than the typical VTEC car - no Sportpack arches over 13Ē wheels for example.  It does have a roll at thoughÖ

I've given up trying to understand their reserve policy......it seems to be the dartboard in the lunchroom....

This vtec is interesting for a number of reasons - first off - the video is one of the best I've seen for highlighting the car - really well done.

However, Don and I both question whether this is a Vtec motor, as it just doesn't sound like it - as he runs up thru the revs the sound of a Vtec intake really changes when it hits that magic spot where the extra valves open. We didn't hear that at all......

I also was trying to determine what final drive he has in it.....a couple of other people have mentioned that too....bidding got off to a good start at least.

Well assuming they actually know what motor they have in it, the D16Z6 SOHC is a VTEC motor. It was most likely from a Honda Civic or maybe a Del Sol. It is one of the lower powered versions of the D16 VTEC.

As they say in the car trade "that's when two fools met, one for bidding that much and the other for not accepting the bid".
Good luck to the seller if he can get more than that anywhere.

It always amazes me how many people actually think you "should" make money restoring a car. Sometimes you can, most times you can't and you should probably be happy breaking even in most cases. You generally only make money if you managed to acquire the car in decent shape for a lot less than usual and then do all the work you can yourself. You also generally have to have something "special" not just a run of the mill 80's/90's mini that doesn't even have a very desirable engine in it. This car would have been a great candidate for a VTEC swap or similar but you would have to be able to acquire it for a hell of a lot less than 16 grand.

A Mini of the Innocenti variety has popped up on BaT.  It will be interesting to see how this one fares considering itís a rarer model than the usual Minis appearing there.  Although this one seems to have been modified with the wrong grille, the wrong badges, the wrong lights, etc. taking much Innocenti-ness away from it.

I wonder if any guys we know own an Innocenti?    ;D

A JDM automatic Mini is now on BaT.   Will this one get the crazy bids like the 998 automatic did last week - up to $16,000?   Dunno.  Itís got a bigger engine but does not look as nice with the ugly LED headlights and they just left the holes in the fenders when they removed the wing mirrors.

The LED's would be fine, I just think it's the black headlight rings that throw it off.  He did go crazy with the black accents.  I have black centers on my rims, black grill, and a black roof, but that's it.

I definitely think he got carried away on the black accents, but it might have looked better with a different color car. That green is so dark it all kind of just blends together.

At a glance I think the bonnet stripes, badge, grill, and seats will hurt it.

Not a fan of everything blacked out either.
I saw a Mini with all the chrome painted body color and it looked good imho.

Holy Crap, take 2.  What is it with BaT and automatic Minis (not my cup of tea) and high reserves and crazy bids?

The 998 automatic last week was bid to $16,000 and went reserve not met!

This automatic was bid to $15,600 and also went reserve not met!

BaT is not making money on these and the sellers sure arenít selling them. I wonder if BaT will allow another high reserve on the next automatic Mini that shows up?

Good question.....their reserve numbers don't seem to follow any sort of reliable format.....more of a dartboard approach.
