After a long delay I've finally got back into the rebuild of my 850. Engine is out and teardown has started. I'm looking for any/all internal engine parts and trans parts (magic wand) for a rebuild. If you have any new parts laying around give me a shout. I won't low ball.

Is this an early or late 850? It makes a difference......

Are you going to overbore it?

You need to know whether you need std or undersized bearings.

What all do you need for the trans? Just synchros, seals and gaskets or bearings and gears too?

I buy pretty much all of my stuff from MiniSpares.....

Howdy Dave!
Your engine rebuild videos are timely for me. Some good stuff on there.
It's a very early 1972, most likely the first one sold in 1972. I have the original purchase invoice showing a date of 01/01/1972, so it was made in 1971. It has the magic wand shifter and I think those were discontinued in 1972. One of the last!

Not sure about the overbore, I have a set of standard pistons, but those are the only parts I have. I don't want to overbore but the machine shop will have to let me know.

The trans shifted smoothy but it did grind at gear change. I havn't opened it up and I know very, very little about "transmichigans." With it being the magic wand I'm hoping there are parts still being produced.

Really a parts list is what I'm looking for. I would really like to rebuild it myself. I'm pretty familiar with how engines work, and I think I could put it together with help.

If the transmission needs significant work, I would recommend buying a replacement from Guessworks.  They do a "hybrid" transmission that is the magic-wand case with later style 4-synchro gear sets.  It makes for very smooth shifting and you get the later gear set ratios and strength.  It is what I put in the Moke I restored.

If yours does not require a lot of work, then it may work out better to refresh it rather than replacement.

Let us know what the case casting number is on the gearbox and at least the first 2/3rds of engine serial number. This will be a great step forward in finding parts. I have to add that the most common cause of gear grinding on newly acquired old Minis is bad clutch hydraulics.

I totally understand.  My jaw dropped when I saw that was now the price.  Mine was nowhere near that expensive when I ordered it 4 years ago.

You should see what MiniSpares wants for a 5 speed now, it's close to $3K (shipped, with core charge), more if you add a cross pin diff carrier!

$1400 for a small bore cylinder head. seems like a lot.
I went to a British car specialist here in Denver and while they do a good job, they wanted $8500 to rebuild my 850 to stock form. So I'm going to try it myself!
Dave, would you be available once I get the engine torn down to go over a parts list with me?

BTW, I do it for considerably less than what they quoted you, if you decide not to DIY. The biggest issue these days is finding the right machine shop that can do competent work, especially on a small bore engine like these.....

Probably the most important is the flywheel puller - do not try to use just any old puller from the auto parts store, it will not work. If you're in the Denver area there should be someone with a puller you can borrow. Or buy one from Guessworks, http://www.guess-works.com/Shop/Parts/display.htm?id=501 and if you think
