"Mini-8" - 1978 Cdn Mini 1000 Restomod
Album - Owner: jmangan - 14 items
I acquired this project car in 2009. It began life as a 1978 Canadian-spec Mini 1000, and was owned by the same family that bought it new until I bought it. During its first 30 years it underwent one restoration, and then a thorough conversion to racing specs. Unfortunately, the owner acquired other priorities and was forced to divest himself of the car. Its name derives from the fact that it is my eighth Mini lifetime. I have created my own website,, but I am also posting a few pics here to give other Mini freaks an idea of what I'm up to.

02 New body
When the original body rusted into dust, as most Ontario Minis did, the owner acquired this body from the UK and converted it to LHD.

06 Underbody
Minifin drums had been installed all around, and the underside coated before painting. I added more undercoat to change the colour to black.

07 Trunk
The car came to me with a nice fuel cell. I had to modify it slightly to accept a fuel gauage.

08 Engine bay
I made my own defroster from an old ventilation fan. The car will not be driven in winter, so has no heater.

11 Second dashboard
I fabricated the dash from clear plastic, which helped a lot in locating it. I then applied a peel-and stick carbon fibre paper.

12 Third dashboard
This is the centre of my custom-designed dashboard. I wanted to keep some of the raw racer feel about it.

13 New trunk lid
I had to acquire new badges and make my own licence plate holder. I got a locksmith to fabricate new keys for the trunk and doors.

14 Glass
The glass installation was something I put off as long as possible, so that I would have easy access to the area around the scuttle and behind the dash
