Well, it looks like I somehow got 'shanghaid' into Windows 10.

I don't really know how it happened, but in my complacency, I closed the Windows 10 'free offer' popup window and it downloaded.  So now, I'm stuck with Google Chrome, and my old Internet Explorer shortcuts that I filed throughout my PC don't open.

One of the things that really chafs my grunions, though, is that everything is wierd.

I've an extensive file system on my 'F' drive, and everytime I try to look at something in one of the folders, the right-hand scroll bar jumps back to the top of the list.  It's a real pain in the ass, and I'm soon going to start looking at an alternative -

Programs are 'Apps', and incomplete/abbreviated versions of what used to allow me to adjust settings.  What is 'Snap' and what is 'Snapping a window'?

The PC wants to share everything, and saves things automatically on my 'C' drive - which I kept clean, save for operating system and programs.  Everything else was simply saved in my 'F' drive, where I setup file systems.   In the attached image, I've selected 'F' for general storage, but who knows where things will end up.  'F' is 'f*cking nebulous'...

Frustrating...

Sorry Dave, I can't accept that.

This is why ordinary people go 'postal' -

I'm not about to give up my autonomy to the 'Cloud', nor will I accept that 'they', a handful of smoothie-drinking, Clearasil-smearing, bubbly and optimistic 20-somethings, know what's best for me and my storage.  These folks haven't met an unshaven, cigarette-smoking, whiskey (or whatever's on tap)-drinking, politically incorrect, Old Spice wearing 50-something grumpy guy who really could give them a life lesson...

I'm not asking much, just want my stuff to be neatly organised, and me to have control over where it goes and how I get to look at it.  Like the scroll bar that all of a sudden jumps back to the top after 5 or 10 seconds.  It never did that before, why now?  Who determined that I want it that way?  I didn't change it, 'they' did...

It's like my desktop - my PC opens to the old Windows 98 style desktop, not that abominable blanket of  'App' crap.  Took me about 2 weeks to figure out how to get it this way, when I 'upgraded' to Windows 8.  Upgrade, my arse...

(warning rant)I came in last Monday to this shit on the work computer turned it on came back a bit later and windows 10 was installing WTF A-holes I got stuff to do customers are coming in and invoices can't be made parts orders have to be done on the phone can't access shit on the computer that I need to even hand write a invoice. Im changing my system to also store customer data and invoicing  on the external drives that can be accessed from other computers that I will also install the invoicing software on. But who the hell authorized the windows 10 on a monday morning? I had been thinking of installing it but on my time over a weekend or something F-ers just went and did it. Took like half a day and could not have been a worse day for this shit.
Rant over,well kind of.

Yep you are right this is how normal people go postal im sick sick sick of having some counter intuitive POS operating system that isn't worth a damn. and uses 25% of cpu for system idle processes.

BTW snapping a window is just a quick way to put up multiple windows on your desk top just left click drag it to where you want not a bad feature.

Probably too late for this but here is an article on how to stop it from happening.

My wives computer at home upgraded without warning, crashed and reverted back to windows 7.

I had to do some research to find the upgrade files and delete them.

Good read here.

http://www.howtogeek.com/228551/how-to-stop-windows-7-or-8-from-downloading-windows-10-automatically/

Windows is making a huge mistake, I spent the weekend pondering alternatives.  I hate apple so that will never happen. I used to be a DOS user and resisted the Windows movement for a long long time.

I hate the 8 format and 10 format. I skipped Vista because it sucked so bad and eventually went to 7, which required me to upgrade a lot of software in my office that was no longer compatible.

This windows 10 release is a debacle.

That link above will take you to this website which has a cool program to turn off the Win10 upgrade.   I have used it and it works.

I do not understand why people "hate" Win 10, or even 8 for that matter...for me they both work just fine. Yes I had to adjust a bit to the changes, but once I did it's all very easy to use. If you don't want to use the cloud, you don't have to - I don't. I store all my pics and such right here on the ol hard drive just like always.

I tried using a Linux distro on an old laptop that wasn't supported anymore, what a disaster!

I think Win stuff works just fine, but I concede that Apple has it's stuff together. I have a friend who runs his business out of his phone and he was having big problems getting Win to sync everything up between his iPhone and his computers - so he switched to all Apple stuff and now he says it works seamlessly. However he still has a Win computer for Photoshop (he's a professional photographer)

One thing I appreciate about Win stuff is the lack of problems I've had with the last two versions with malware or virus - no issues at all ever now.

Some people have computers that will not run 8 or 10 and will crash or at the least give the blue screen of death when the operating system is forced upon them. Those people are screwed.

I will upgrade when I have time, not when Microsoft tells me to and I will be pissed if it forces an upgrade on me while I am trying to work.

I have had Windows 8 on a netbook since it came out, it is not for me, I am not a fan of the tiles. I upgraded that netbook to 10 to see if I like 10 and it is better but the simplicity of 7 is much better. 10 is a step forward but still not too cel phone / tablet style for my liking.

I understand the underlying architecture of 8 and 10 is supposed to be very elegant and less demanding on your hardware, and for that reason alone I am game for it.

I purchased a very expensive laptop with the idea of replacing my older laptop with it, I neglected to make sure it had 7 on it and it has 8 which sucks. I tried to upgrade it to 10, it crashes and resets to 8. Sadly, I hardly use the machine because I hate the way 8 works.  If I wanted tiles I would be working on a tablet, I am not on a tablet I am on an expensive laptop and do not want tiles. Such a waste of money, my son offered to uninstall 8 and install 7 in it for me. I may take him up on it.

Surely you're aware that you can run both 8 and 10 in a mode that makes them look and act like 7? No tiles?

Are you talking about Classic Shell?
http://www.classicshell.net/

Or is there something I am missing where I can make my Start button not launch me into the Apps land? and actually let me have my important programs pinned in the start menu.

I am just pinning them along the bottom now, which is o.k. I guess.

My problem is I do not want 8 nor 10 right now, I like working in 7, I am playing with 8 and 10 on weekends and not comfortable with them yet to implement them into my company. I need to know them better and I am not there yet. So I am not really happy that Microsoft is force fucking these into my life.

Does not one else find it odd something they sold for as long as they are in business now is free?   That alone bothers me, I know they are trying to have you store everything with them and I guess they get to look through it all and sell that in for for marketing.   I really have nothing to hide, I do however like controlling my data, I like the idea of cloud storage, do not get me wrong, I think it will be the norm in 5 years time.

I just want to transition to it myself not be forced to.

I was able to successfully suppress the 'tiles' back when I first 'upgraded' to Windows 8, and thankfully my 'desktop' settings transferred.  I honestly don't know how I did it; I doubt I'd be able to do it again.  It took forever to get the computer to simply open to the desktop and not the 'Apps' tile blanket.

I don't like losing Windows Explorer, though.  Yes, it's still there, but it locks the system if I try to use it.  All my internet shortcuts, stored throughout my file archives, are '.website' extensions, and as such, Google Chrome won't open them.  And, because they haven't any properties that I can extract and paste into a Word document, they're useless.  Not at all useful when seeking employment, or trying to find an interesting webpage...

Google Chrome doesn't have the 'In Private' browsing or the 'padlock' when buying things online that Explorer did, so I'm a bit unsure of 'sensitive' transactions.  And I guess there'll be no more porn...

Also, just tonight, I tried to view the source code on a picture from my local vintage Castrol product website (http://www.castrolshop.dk/shop/castrol-classic-xl-187p.html) in order to try to get a better picture.  Chrome doesn't let one view the source code.

Chrome also doesn't automatically open to Google - have to hit the little house icon.  And, can't right-click Chrome and open multiple windows, need to detach a new tab.  Pain in the butt...

And whatever happened to my 'Favorites'?

I had to 'Google' instructions on how to turn off my computer after Microsoft took it upon themselves to invade my machine with Windows 10 - they moved the 'off' button.

Microsoft's 'Edge' browser didn't look like very much, looks like some 'App Crap' mini tablet/telephone program - I'm on a fire-breathing dragon-sized PC.

I don't like kids, so I don't know any, let alone someone who can 'splain the rational behind this concept.  The system worked before.  It worked well.

I really want to punch a geek...

Oh, and another little bitch...  I just opened a .pdf file for some fishing lures (seatrout/steelhead) I ordered last night - Google Chrome is saving them on my 'C' drive as a download.  Even if I open it in another window.  I opened the 'users/downloads' file on the 'C' drive and have all sorts of crap from the past week - even though I saved them as I normally do in their properly designated destination files.

My neatly organised and comfy way of handling my stuff is pretty much ruined.  Fantastic...

I'm livid.

I feel this may have gone unnoticed and just want to say it is Gold!!

Every time I read it I laugh.  While I am not reveling in your pain, trust me I feel it, I did get a kick out of that.

On topic, I am ready for a cloud server, I am setting up my own, for now but will eventually succumb and get an offsite cloud based server, Amazon has stupid cheap prices and internet speeds are getting to the point where it is easy to access. As I told my wife, no more coming to work in the morning and finding your server crashed.  No more worrying about hardware upgrades and swapping out old hard drives.

In the 16 years I have owned this company I have dealt with about 4 server crashes, one was recent, thank god I back up, it did cost me some time and money to get everything back up to speed. Which in the grand scheme of things, it would be cheaper for me to store on a cloud and let them worry about hardware.

Window just forced itself onto my receptionists computer, a key piece of software we use every day, a job tracking  program is incompatible.  I am slammed busy and my company has just been taken to its knees.

I am completely fucked here right now.

I feel your pain, daily...

We've had 'Windows' since Windows93, and that's why we still have it - fear of the unknown alternative.  But, Microsoft deserves a pistol-whipping for this Windows10 invasion.  I hate them, wish I could line 'em all up and Bitch-slap them, each in turn.

Can't use Explorer anymore, lost all my passwords and stored information on my job-search websites.  Most of my programs didn't work after the Vista failure, so I'm pretty bare-bones now.  Just got an offer to upgrade my Office pack - do I dare???

They never tell you what the consequences are.  Sure, the information is there, in an incomprehensible tech article buried on their website.

Thank you very much.

Jim, can you restore to an earlier point - pre Win 10 install - and get it running again? Then turn off all updates while you sort out the legacy program?

Yes, I found this.

http://www.howtogeek.com/220723/how-to-uninstall-windows-10-and-downgrade-to-windows-7-or-8.1/

I am going back in tomorrow (Sunday) to try to make this work. We just finished running 2 crews this morning and I am heading home now.

If you successfully get the computer downgraded back to Windows 7 or 8, I have some notes on how to prevent the upgrade again.  It is a list of the "updates" to uninstall and disable that will prevent the "auto-upgrade" to Windows 10 and also turn off some of the tracking Microsoft retrofitted into 7 and 8.

The "updater" is KB3035583 and is listed under the "Recommended" updates in the Update Manager.  You make sure that KB is uninstalled and then "hide" it to prevent it re-installing on later updates.

The tracking updates are KB3068708, KB3075249 and KB3080149.  Uninstall and hide those as well.

If any of those are not installed, make sure they are not selected to install and hide them to prevent future installing.

To check if the Windows 10 install package is on the computer even after restoring back to Windows 7 or 8, turn on viewing "hidden" folders at the root of your hard drive.  Look for a folder named $Windows.~BT and that is the 6GByte install package.  To remove it, you first have to set your login to be the owner of it and all subfolders.  Then ensure your login has full security privileges to the folder and all subfolders.  Then you can delete that parent folder and get rid of the install package along with getting back your 6Gbyte of space.

Sometimes, setting the ownership will also let you also set the privileges at the same time.

To set the ownership and privileges/permissions:
- Right-click the parent folder and select 'Properties'.
- Click on the "Security" tab
- Click on the "Advanced" button near the bottom
- Click on the "Owner" tab of the new panel that opened
- Click the "Edit" button
- Select (single click) your username/login in the 'Change Owner To:' box
- Check the box for 'Replace owner on subcontainers and objects'
- Click the "Apply" button
- A message may pop up indicating you need to close and re-open the properties to change the permissions (privileges)
- Click the "OK" button on that message
- Click the "OK" button on the panel for editing the ownership
- Click the "OK" button on the "Advanced Settings" panel
- Click the "OK" button on the "Properties" panel
- Right-click the parent folder again and select "Properties"
- Click on the "Security" tab
- Select your login/username from the top list and then click the "Edit" button
- Select your login/username again
- Check the "Allow" box for 'Full Control'
- Check the box for applying to all subfolders if offered
- Click the "Apply" button

You should now be able to delete the parent folder and all subfolders.

Mike, I posted a link to an app you can download that takes all the work out of blocking 10.

This is it and it worked great, I have it on my laptop here at the office and just installed it on my receptionists PC.
http://ultimateoutsider.com/downloads/

Long story short, she had 2 computers up front, one laptop and one monster gaming PC. The gaming PC was purchased in response to the horrible architecture of Quickbooks 2013. I had to upgrade in 2013 because the older much less resource demanding version of QB I was using was not compatible with Win7, which I had upgraded to in 2013 on all my machines in the office.

So I purchased 2013 and it was hanging up the laptop horribly, I purchased a monster gaming PC (i5 processor, 8gb ram high clock speed graphics card etc.) and it runs 2013 but works pretty hard with it.

We kept the laptop and ran this subscription based specialized Land Surveyor specific job tracking program on it that was its sole purpose.

I decided to use this opportunity to move it over to the gaming PC and retire the laptop. I left 10 in it and will mess with it more at home and get used to it since it is inevitable I am going to have to upgrade to it.

So this is how I am spending my Sunday morning, what was going to be my only day off this week.  Thanks Microsoft!!

I just finished downloading the software, installing it and populating my database into it. It fired up fine and I immediately backed up. When I asked my receptionist when she last backed up when we thought we were fubared and I got a look of horror on her face.  She said she backs up every few days, I told her with how busy we are to back up every night unless she will enjoy re-entering in 20-50 lost entries into the database. I told he it was her choice, 3 mouse clicks or an hour of data entry.

OK now I am leaving my office once again and trying to have a nice afternoon.

FU Microsoft.

yeah FU Microsoft

I also like the wallpaper.

I'm so afraid of a update on the new cnc plasma table I just bought I don't even have it on the network I transfer all the cad drawings on thumb drive from the office computer.
I need to do the prevent upgrade from happening stuff so I can get it networked but until then no way, already had my business brought down by the upgrade once. How dose Microsoft think this is ok?
Mini Dave,
Businesses like mine support a lot of legacy products that are far from end of service life and the support/programming software won't run on 8 or 10. I don't want 8 or 10 I can't even use it that is a reason why some of use don't like it, it's not backwards compatiable to fairly (in our world) new software that I need to use daily. Lucky for us the new products are moving away far far away from windows with either their own or andriod software on tablets for programming and promise us that in the future this will make support easier and not dependent on Microsoft so even the big company's are saying FU Microsoft.
