I think Gonzalo might have been a shill, bumping the price to $10K in one jump, but you're right - RNM

Yup.  He's brand new to BaT this month with no prior comments or bids.   Plus his $3K jump in bids is a hell of jump.

Had the Seller done more to address the "it's way over in Germany" elephant in the room he would have had much better luck, IMO

And there is another Mini for sale on BaT.  This one is a rare 1071S with some modifications but it generally looks largely original.

It will be very interesting to see how high this one goes.  I'm guessing it will break $25K-$30K without a sweat.

This is an extremely nice car with good provenance from a well regarded Mini owner, I agree - if any should, this one should bring the big bux. Sure didn't take long for the Mini cognoscenti to figure out who's car it was!

Agreed, it's a fantastic example of a 1071 being sold by a rock solid expert.  Yet there are still posters in the comments who are basically doubting the validity of the car and the integrity of the seller.  Two or three guys out there purely guessing as to what size the brake rotors should be, or how the lost engine tag is the smoking gun.

I bet it goes north of $40K and probably back to the UK, even though it was an export car.

As an aside, did you guys catch Wold's #2 Mini racecar for sale on eBay?

I was one of the guys discussing the brakes and got my ass handed to me as ususal - some of those guys do know their Mini minutia!

My experience was different, but hey - I've only owned one MkI Cooper S in my life, some of these guys have owned bunches of them.

Agree with Velopackrat it should bring mid $40's and may end up in Japan or Europe as it is straight enough to be bought back to near original again. In the UK they would rather have a rust free LHD than an ex rusty welded up RHD and they are easily enough converted to RHD if you so desire. Cleaning up the floors like the owner of the almond green/white car did on a recent sale on BaT would have gone a long way with presentation on this car and as the engine bay and other panels are already painted it would not have hurt the remaining originality imo.

The guy in Germany who was offering the rally Mini on BaT last week is now auctioning a Lotus Cortina over at BaT.

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1966-lotus-cortina-mk1/

The comments are interesting reading as many of them are challenging the authenticity of it being a true Lotus Cortina, with particular notice paid to a VIN plate said to be suspect combined with a questionable letter of certification.

Grab some popcorn.

I did not read much of the comments on the rally Mini posting, but from what was indicated here, the seller of the Cortina may have brought it upon himself due to his responses (or lack thereof) on the Mini auction.

Wow.  To quote Ron Burgundy, "Boy!  That escalated quickly!".

There was just a HUGE bid jump of nearly $14,000 and the high bid on the Cooper S 1071 is now at $30K.  And he is a real bidder -  he has already bought a Ferrari off BaT.

There are 4 days still to go!

This Cooper S could sell for $50K plus.

Unfortunately, this sort of thing is driving up the prices of all Minis.  Folks are trying to use such auction results (even if the auctioned car legitimately deserves the high price) to justify asking $25K+ for a $12K car.

Agreed.  Huge difference between a 1071S and my Mini (for example) in terms of collectability and value.

Yet the exposure of the rarest cars selling for the top prices does help raise the values of the lesser cars too, to some degree I think.  After all not everyone can afford to pay more than $30K for a mostly orginal Mk. I Cooper S, so that creates interest (and increased values) by people looking for a Mini that is cheaper, and that they can modify without worrying about hurting orginality.

Look what has happned to Porsche 911s over the past few years.  As the more desireable models have gone sky high, the plain vanilla models (I'm talking to you, 912)  have increased in price too.

But you also get the cases of cars that have had maintenance neglected and been abused suddenly going from being a $12K car at best to asking prices of $22500 - case in point: the green 1981 Mini panel Van I owned 2.5 years ago.  Half of the rear interior work I did has been stripped out, it got "rallied" and now has a significant pull to the right, steering now has significant play, the current owner added a roof rack and large removable vinyl circles to the doors and jacked the price up $8K.

(I've been "consulted" about it by someone that was very strongly interested in it until they had a PPI done.  They shared the PPI results with me.)

I heard. I think he may have even said it's worth 25k.

The 1071 S is now up to $40K with 2 full days left in the auction.  There is still time for nitpicking about the missing brake booster, the speedo in kph instead of mph, etc.

But I don't think any of that will really matter.  I think this will soon be the highest bid Mini sold on BaT, closing in the high 50s, or even greater.

That only went to $10K and was RNM.      Wonder if he'll try to sell it on BaT because of the likely outcome on the 1071S ?

I'm curious what reserve on the race car was, not that I need one.  I doubt any of us could build one like it for less than $25K.  I think assembling the motor and gearbox alone would exceed $10K.
But in regard to the 1071, it's an odd fact that all the negativity has subsided and Mr. Wold looks to see a nice payday.  For example, and this is not a knock on the car, I think the original color of OEW also meant the roof was white.  Reason I say this, on Heritage Certificates it usually states body and roof color.  At least my two did.  On his, it reads 'monotone' after OEW.  One could order the cars that way if one so chose back then...
So, what would you guys do with it if it was in your driveway?  Drive it as is or restore it?  If restore, to what degree?

I'd just leave it as it is and enjoy it.  Plus, if it sells for $50K plus or so as I think it might, then doing a $30K restoration on top of that and bingo you've got $80K plus into it -- and there'd always be a worry about chipping the paint or breaking something if it was used.

In that light, personalizing a plain-Jane Mini instead just as you want it (which could even be a near-perfect Cooper clone) for 1/3 of that amount and then enjoying the hell out of it by driving it perhaps makes more economic sense?

The Cooper 1071S Just sold for $50K.   Not as high I thought, and not the most expensive Mini ever on BaT, but a pretty hefty price nonetheless.

The seller said he was feeling seller's remorse the last few days - I think that should ease his thoughts a bit! The sad part is I doubt any of these cars will see the light of day again, except at a concours event or something....fresh motor suspension and brakes and an imperfect body this car is perfect to be used and enjoyed. Sad to me that it won't....

Wait, I missed something...is Dave the $50K buyer dude purely a collector?  It won't get driven?  Man, bummer.  And speaking of driven, maybe we need a new thread of what specs constitute our dream Mini build?  I'll go first.  And this is coming from a guy w/ a nice Cooper S:)

Roll up windows but 10x6 Minilites and group 2 arches.  Mk1 treatment.  Specialist Components EFI.  Quaife w/ 3.2 gears.  Smootha ride. Either Tweed grey w/ white roof or Almond Green w/ white roof.  No markings whatsoever.

Yeah, the 1071S is going into a collection, but I'm not sure that means it won't be driven.   The winning bidder talks about driving his Mini beach car, so sounds like he does drive them at least occasionally.

That sounds very tasty indeed. I would be quite satisfied with that spec.  To me, 10" wheels are the best looking size for a Mini.  But my tastes have changed and I now think the 'no flares' look with modest wheel widths, like 5", are preferable.

At MiniMeet West in 2016 I saw several very clean looking Tweed Grey Minis and they left a lasting favorable impression on me.   In person, the color looks very vintage and very refined.

So, this is kinda close to what you are saying (except for being a Mk. I and having narrower wheels and badging).

The Australian Clubman GT.  Pretty much a 1275 Cooper S with clubman nose and Australian roll up windows.  Think only a couple hundred were made.  This one was "stolen" on BaT before minis got hot and I don't think people realized what it was.  I was still a good year from being able to buy it and regret not just doing it.  Even liked the crazy color.
