I'm thinking we should reference some codes as we get them for future reference.  I just bought some tahiti blue in dupont cromobase and its calling it biarritz blue, code h9820 K.  Now the next time I lose my can of paint I'll be able to search and find it!

4.gif That is great. I was able to find my car by typing in "Austin". They also had "Innocenti".
Disregard all the above text, it is flatulence (still)

Learned something new about some of these old codes and Dupont.  Even if you have the chip and code, they may not have formulas for the older stuff.  Many of them never transfered over through the years.  However carpaintonline.com seems to have the one I couldn't get at the shop this week and others after entering in color names. Ordered a small sample to see how well it turns out, then I can just scan it and get the formula if I like it.

jeff10049

I did not see speedwell blue on the list maybe I missed it the code is BU01.

I found most of the color chips on line to be way off in colors. I bought a 250 ml sample of what I thought I wanted and sprayed a fender. Too dark for me, so I decided to go for the COF that was original to the front clip that I bought from Japan.
Looking through various sources this is also know as BLVC 818, and was called
Signal Red from 69-77
Flame Red from 88-99 (or 2000)
Flare Red on some models from 89-91
and Modena red from 88-89
Anyway, here is how it turns out.

That is Sikkens poliester. 2 liters of base, two liters of top, and two liters of clear.

Wow.....6 liters of paint and he didn't even do the bed.....that seems like a lot of paint......

I don't know how much they used on my old Jag when they painted it but it must have been a lot cause I sent it to the paint shop on the rotisserie and they painted everything, inside, bottom, firewall, under the hood as well as the outside.

Are there paint codes to be found for early cars.

My 61 Van looks to have the original paint......red
I imagine there may have only been one red for commercial vehicles....would like to know which it is.

Thanks

94touring

Codes yes, formulas not always easy to find.  I have had good luck getting samples to be matched from auto color library, or just order and spray their paint.

Spitz

The van is extremely faded and worn.
Would like to see a list of colours available in 61....especially commercial

Richard1

The problem with most of the sites is that they have done a lousy job of scanning in original paint charts, and the colors they show don't represent reality. If you can find the original code, take it to a paint store (I use Glasurit/Sikkens) and they can pull up the formula in their computers.

But when you think you have the color you want, you can do either as I did and buy a small quantity to try, or post and ask for pictures of cars with that paint code. I posted the unpolished pics here a while ago, with pictures taken in the shop. Here are polished ones outside for code COF. The sun and reflections always play tricks with the camera, so several angles are good.

Spitz

That may be the colour I go with.....Signal Red I guess that would be ( COF )
But 69 ?

What was the code for Tartan Red?  Wee the Royal Mail vans Tartan?

Richard1

Tartan red has black in the formulation. I was going to use it, so I bought 250 ml and sprayed my front fender, with the exception of the A panel. Then sanded and polished it, and polished the A panel Flame Red/Signal Red COF that was on the front clip.

It was considerably darker, so I change my mind and went with the COF.

Here you can see the Tartan Red front and Signal Red A panel.

Spitz

That's a great comparison Richard....thanks.
I'm thinking my van may have been Tartan ........  I'm liking your colour better than the fender.

94touring

This is tartan red also.  What brand of paint are you going with?

94touring

What I do if the paint shop doesn't have the formula for the codes for the paint (in this case RD9 is tartan red), I look it up on http://www.autocolorlibrary.com and have them mix me enough to spray a panel, which I then can take into my paint supplier and have them run the scanner on it to get a formula.  The rest of the paint is used on various areas of the car, so it's not a complete waste.
