I have a line on a Metro - Turbo, head, intake, carb and exhaust......anyone have any thoughts on what I should offer the guy assuming it's all there and in good condition?

I'm planning to rebuild the engine in the green Mini this summer as it's smoking a bit now and then, figure I might as well go for some HP while I'm in there.....add a little torque too. My 2nd gear synchro is a little weak when it's cold but works fine once it's been shifted a couple of times, but in for a penny........

He also has a "race" (his words, not mine) 1380 he wants to sell..... wonder if he's going Vtec? Anyway, I'll be talking to him this evening so anyone who has a thought on the value on this, let me know today, please.

$800?  Does it have the distributor for it?

tmsmini

Is that the one on facebook?
As I have always wanted an ERA, I have often wondered what the wear points were on either the ERA turbo or Metro turbo. I think they are the almost the same engine, maybe a few refinements on the ancillaries for the ERA.

MiniDave

Does it have a special dizzy?  I'll make sure to ask.....

You'll need something to pull timing under boost.

Turbos themselves are easy to rebuild, provided there are parts for this turbo.  Garret or something type?

A big note to remember - to fit a true Metro Manifold + turbo behind the engine , the firewall must be boxed out.  ( needs addtional room)

Ebay has a pretty good ' reference of a part set across the pond.  you would possibly add the Metro Turbo head that had bigger better valves.

Gearboxes had slightly better bearings 1st motion specifically.

Some metro turbos had 'special' cranks .. heat treated of some sort.

its defiantly unique to go turbo setup = have to somewhat also worry about cooling .. and fuel pressure + return fuel applications.

Standard Metro turbo dizzy will work. but there are other options too like a 123 - that has boost retard
or go all the way with full EDI timing trigger wheels...

___

I too am far down the turbo build rabbit hole.. ( like reducing compression with deep dished pistons)  MED Omega's
  Twin finger clutch options.

the Optoins hole is deep

MiniDave

I hear you on going down the rabbit hole......  ;D

I still remember a "unique" arrangement that a user on Mini Mania a long time ago did.  I lost the bookmark and did not get the details from the post way back when it was still accessible.  I remember the guy's username was FortFun.  He did a rear mount turbo.  The turbo was nested under the car in the rear subframe.

MiniDave

There were a lot of those done on drag racers back in the day (70's) but that long tube going forward again means hellacious turbo lag......I've also seen them mounted over on the side above the bell housing, but I have a brake booster there right now. Probably could go without that but my car is a late enough model that it has the cross shaft and all that.....

I'd probably ditch the brake booster but that's just me.

Jet motors does a kit for the turbo over the clutch housing.  - they offer a full kit.  but i have yet to really read and see some actual details of its performance.. By putting the turbo over there i just cant get over the additional exhaust pipes required and the heat that will inject into the enginebay... among everything else.

This person on Instagram has an EXCELLENT build = high quality = top to bottom  MPI Block.
https://www.instagram.com/turbocoopersport/

His manifold is a 'mirage" aftermarket  and uses a Saab Turbo  - GT13  ( smaller than the metro turbo original )  and the manifold is designed to squeeze the turbo with no firewall modifications.

His setup is similar to my plan = but I'm not going inter cooled... Like the Metro turbo.  turbo straight to intake plenum.   Low boost under 8PSI will work ... non inter cooled. I also drove a car at CMU this year that was also direct turbo ran about 6PSI = WAS solid for a performer daily driver.
His car had a HARD LSD so it was an arm battle any direction other than straight  but the power it pulled was awesome.

I'm still gathering parts =   Have block and head + new crank  + A+ Transmission Core  still searching for the right other bits to gather . last hump for myself are Pistons + LSD + EDI Igintion trigger wheel setup .  I want the whole lump ready to go before i tear anything apart = Not touching my working 1275 in my car now.

Won a Raffle BANGIN Turbo SPEC double forked clutch setup with Lightweight flywheel on an Instagram raffle that was posted  - 4 entries helped me win!  out of 26 Total entries.!

Jetmotors setup.  A little water injection and you wouldn't need to worry about the intercooler if it was a concern.

tmsmini

There is a person on the Mini Forum who also has a MPi based turbo setup. He has a build thread some where.

Here is an ERA from the Japan site:
https://www.goo-net-exchange.com/usedcars/ROVER/MINI/700980016730200207001/index.html

$47,000 if I calculate correctly only 15 K Miles, so 21K is a very good buy.

MiniDave

I'm surprised at the color on that one - I've only seen red and green before......

Yes, I had never seen it before either. There are white and black as well. There used to be a site that had a copy of a brochure, but I think it is gone now.

I don't mean to muddy your post Dave but here are some stats from the defunct site:
http://eraturbo.co.uk/register/register.htm
(looks like the site may be back)
only available on the wayback machine:
https://web.archive.org/web/20130811183313/http://eraturbo.co.uk/register/register.htm

Not sure what the date of this info is.
Statistics
UK Cars

99 UK spec cars were built, of these :-
4 are known to of been stolen or written off

9 were exported to Japan, though one of these has now been imported again.
5 were exported to Germany,
and 1 to the Sultan of Brunei.
Therefore there are a maximum of 81 cars in the UK, though I'm sure this figure is much lower.

Originally, 53 of the cars were Green, 30 Red, 9 Black, 4 White and 3 Silver.

Japanese Cars
337 Japanese spec cars were built, of these :-
157 were in Red,
and 180 in BRG.

Here is the thread on the Sportspack Turbo:

It is long thread
(this is the same one that jedduh01 pointed out)

So, no brown ones? Can't believe they were able to get A/C in this brown one too!

Doesn't look like it, must have been repainted. It still matches the interior to a degree

MPlayle

Dave is right, it does have a/c.  The condenser is mounted to the right inner wing.  You can also see the hoses coming from the compressor under the alternator.

I think all the JDM ERA had AC.
That is why I would prefer a UK version(fantasy)

One last link:
https://issuu.com/eraturbo/docs/era_book.docx

The site seems to have issues for me but it is the presentation ERA made to Rover and has some details about what was changed.
