Split washer for hub cracked
« on: March 12, 2019, 03:32:55 PM »
Torqued to 188 ft/lbs with a flat washer then torqued the tapered washer to the same and then enough to align to the hole. Broken when I removed it.
Has anyone used the tapered washer KAD offers without the split?

No, but....

A guy on Facebook has had some special washers made that replace these, he's selling them for like $10 ea.....I'll see if I can find his info and report back. He claims his are good for over 300lbft

I use my impact wrench to tighten mine, I have never had one break like that!

So here's the thing. The front wheel bearings weren't loose and there wasn't anything suspect with the front end I would have never known it was broken until I took it apart to replace the CV boots. Much to my surprise when I took it out it fell apart in my hand and of course I didn't have another in my stock of parts.

Although expensive I bought a couple of the 7 Ent ones.

These are KAD the ones 7 Ent sells, no split. They look to be really well made like most KAD stuff. We'll see how they work and last.

I thought the split was to allow some compression of the washer into the taper. So how did the KAD ones achieve that?

I don't know. This is from the KAD site.

KAD own design CV Taper Washer.
We have made them without the split, this stops them from closing up under cornering pressure and momentarily loosening the wheel bearing.
We have tested them over the last few years with great success!
Sold individually.

I'll report back after I install them and drive it a bit.

The split closes when the hub nut is tightened. I always thought the split was to help release the taper when disassembling. I would put a bit of high temperature anti-seize on the tapered face to keep it from fretting.

Yeah, I can't imagine the split being able to expand and loosen even under racing conditions, but the fellow I'm trying to reach about the special axle nuts developed them for exactly this reason, because his kept coming loose on the track.

So before I installed the "unsplit" tapered washer I slid it onto the axle/CV to check the fit, it fits snug on the machined section. It set up perfectly, I used the flat washer/torque/remove washer/install tapered washer/torque/line up cotter pin hole method everything works as it should. I like the higher quality of these KAD washers they really are nicely made.
I'll report back if I have issues or something important like the wheel falls off.......
