Title: Paint codes
Post by: 94touring on May 11, 2009, 08:01:10 AM
I'm thinking we should reference some codes as we get them for future reference.  I just bought some tahiti blue in dupont cromobase and its calling it biarritz blue, code h9820 K.  Now the next time I lose my can of paint I'll be able to search and find it!

Learned something new about some of these old codes and Dupont.  Even if you have the chip and code, they may not have formulas for the older stuff.  Many of them never transfered over through the years.  However carpaintonline.com seems to have the one I couldn't get at the shop this week and others after entering in color names. Ordered a small sample to see how well it turns out, then I can just scan it and get the formula if I like it.

I found most of the color chips on line to be way off in colors. I bought a 250 ml sample of what I thought I wanted and sprayed a fender. Too dark for me, so I decided to go for the COF that was original to the front clip that I bought from Japan.
Looking through various sources this is also know as BLVC 818, and was called
Signal Red from 69-77
Flame Red from 88-99 (or 2000)
Flare Red on some models from 89-91
and Modena red from 88-89
Anyway, here is how it turns out.

That is Sikkens poliester. 2 liters of base, two liters of top, and two liters of clear.

Wow.....6 liters of paint and he didn't even do the bed.....that seems like a lot of paint......

I don't know how much they used on my old Jag when they painted it but it must have been a lot cause I sent it to the paint shop on the rotisserie and they painted everything, inside, bottom, firewall, under the hood as well as the outside.

Are there paint codes to be found for early cars.

My 61 Van looks to have the original paint......red
I imagine there may have only been one red for commercial vehicles....would like to know which it is.

Thanks

Codes yes, formulas not always easy to find.  I have had good luck getting samples to be matched from auto color library, or just order and spray their paint.

The van is extremely faded and worn.
Would like to see a list of colours available in 61....especially commercial

The problem with most of the sites is that they have done a lousy job of scanning in original paint charts, and the colors they show don't represent reality. If you can find the original code, take it to a paint store (I use Glasurit/Sikkens) and they can pull up the formula in their computers.

But when you think you have the color you want, you can do either as I did and buy a small quantity to try, or post and ask for pictures of cars with that paint code. I posted the unpolished pics here a while ago, with pictures taken in the shop. Here are polished ones outside for code COF. The sun and reflections always play tricks with the camera, so several angles are good.

That may be the colour I go with.....Signal Red I guess that would be ( COF )
But 69 ?

What was the code for Tartan Red?  Wee the Royal Mail vans Tartan?
Title: Re: Paint codes
Post by: Richard1 on March 02, 2015, 03:33:04 PM
Tartan red has black in the formulation. I was going to use it, so I bought 250 ml and sprayed my front fender, with the exception of the A panel. Then sanded and polished it, and polished the A panel Flame Red/Signal Red COF that was on the front clip.

It was considerably darker, so I change my mind and went with the COF.

Here you can see the Tartan Red front and Signal Red A panel.

What I do if the paint shop doesn't have the formula for the codes for the paint (in this case RD9 is tartan red), I look it up on http://www.autocolorlibrary.com (http://www.autocolorlibrary.com) and have them mix me enough to spray a panel, which I then can take into my paint supplier and have them run the scanner on it to get a formula.  The rest of the paint is used on various areas of the car, so it's not a complete waste.

Red is an interesting color. you can sway it orange, pink, or black. I wanted to be in the middle, with no tones either way, but that is just my opinion. The saloon posted is one way to disguise the darkness of the Tartan - putting black on the roof, so it contrasts. If the roof had been white, the red would look much darker.
Title: Re: Paint codes
Post by: MiniDave on March 03, 2015, 09:22:02 AM
I painted my Jag black, and when I went to the paint shop they had 8 X 10 sheet metal examples hanging on the wall to help visualize the color - now I thought black was black but no...........they had about 6-8 different black panels hanging up, and it wasn't till you saw them all side by side that you could really see the difference. I chose blue black, but there was red black, orange black, brown black, grey black, white black (?!) green black and maybe a few more....

He said the color with the most different shades - and the hardest one to match  - was white!

Yeah I like this formulation also looks real close to what my car has. but I only have photos with flash with dull finish but shade looks close.
Dan can you give details on this paint brand type is it RD9 or variation?

I'm a web developer for my day job.  I would be happy to build a super easy to use site to search for colors on the car.  If you all keep posting color codes and samples here I will keep adding them to the site.  Give me some time and I'll get something up.   4.gif
Title: Re: Paint codes
Post by: 94touring on September 22, 2015, 06:22:04 AM
Absolutely.  There is an Excell file in here that has pretty much all the codes.  The problem is not every manufacturer has formulas.  Tcpglobal however has a great site for looking up original codes and giving you the option to buy paint.  What I'll do a lot of times is buy a quart from them of say acrylic enamel to spray floors or hidden areas, and use it to be matched in dupont if they don't have the formulas.  Putting everything in one easy to find page with examples of the colors would be ideal.  Having all the paint on hand would be even better!  At least in this thread we're getting some of the formulas or equivalent colors out there.

Hey Everyone I converted the Excel document to a Google Sheet online so anyone can comment on it and add color codes they know are correct.  Each comment will require approval so that we can confirm the source data ahead of time.  If you do add any comments to the document PLEASE add a source.  I won't add any codes to the website unless they are sourced.

An option I resort to once in awhile if no one has formulas is have http://www.autocolorlibrary.com/  mix you a small batch of the color in acrylic enamel, spray a test panel, take it in for matching.  Then use the enamel for floors ect...

www.colormymini.com (http://www.colormymini.com)

Great resource!

For version 2: Would be sweet if there were a photo or drawing of a Mini and the color selected "painted" the car.
For version 3: Would be sweet if there were several Minis on screen to compare colors (could be last few colors searched, or a list/search box to set each one).

They always look so good with a fresh respray - I like the colors too.....

Do you mind sharing what the paint job cost? It looks like they did the whole inside and bottom as well as the outside. What kind of paint did they use? Modern 2 pack with clear coat or.....?

That may be the colour I go with.....Signal Red I guess that would be ( COF )
But 69 ?

What was the code for Tartan Red?  Wee the Royal Mail vans Tartan?

Post Office Vans were painted with a colour unique to the Post Office.  It was called "Pillar Box Red".  Not a standard BMC or Leyland colour.

Although one might think an early Mini Van in red would be Tartan red, that may not be the case.  BMC had what they referred to as "commercial colours" which were different from what they put on cars.  Also, Post Office vehicles were painted Pillar Box Red.

What I do with older colors that no one has formulas for is buy a batch from autocolor library.  I paint a swatch and take it to my supplier to scan in the material I prefer.  I usually buy a quart from the autocolor people and use it on floors, undersides, interior, ect.. although I'm sure it's good stuff.  When you select the make you need to click on BLMC.

When wanting to match powder coat colors, does anyone know how this is done?   Also, how does the RAL colors compare to the various paint codes?

When it was time for a color choice on my moke I picked the powder color first and had a 6" x 6" metal square done with the other bits. Then that square goes to the paint store and they scan it with their machine to make the mix directions for the paint.

Nice.. I'm doing this in reverse.  I will most likely go with Tahiti blue as my shell color so I'm wondering the best way to match colors.  Likewise for the Pickup, I want to powder coat the wheels English White and I'm not sure how to do this or come close.

Powder coated should have samples of all their possible colors so will probably just need to take a painted part in and get as close as possible.  Not sure if powder coating can custom match colors like paint.

You're right, I may have to paint something using the codes listed in this thread and then take that down for color match..   The is probably my path forward.... . thanks

Pepper white was used on the older BMW Minis and is close to old english white.

Another vote for Pepper White.   I chose it for two reasons: 1) it looks great IMO, and 2) super easy availability since it was used on modern MINIs.

Plus it is MINI paint code 850 so it's symbolically linked the Mini past.   ;D

Yes wood and picket now I remember! I really like the more subtle look of those.

I have looked through so many of the restoration threads here lately that they all kind of run together but I did remember that it was a Dan paintjob. Now I just need to convince him that taking on yet another project would be a good idea one of these years. Hopefully mine won't be quite as much of a project though as the metal should be sound (fingers crossed). Should just need some hammer and dolly work in a few places and a decent prep and paint. Of course I am sure he has been handed such projects before that turned into much worse.

Once I get this next batch of cars fixed up, painted, and out of the shop we'll see how I feel.  Someone from Indiana called the other day needing a mini done up but haven't heard back. Then there's someone in Chicago on the list and probably someone else I'm forgetting...well Don needs some work done on his pickup and another guy near Dave has been talking to me about his mk1 he's restoring.  I have 3 current mini projects I'm doing right now all at once.  So long as my helper keeps helping so I can focus on my own projects without getting burnt out on everyone else's, I'm good to go.

Completely understandable, wish I lived a little closer as I'd be glad to put in some time to learn these sorts of things. Body work is one of those things I have never done but I think I might actually be decent at. Metal fab I can do I have just never done it on a vehicle before so that is one reason I wanted a project car to work on. I have always liked doing things where I am working with my hands and somehow ended up in a career that requires more brain than brawn, go figure.

That looks light Speedwell blue. They also painted early Bugeye/Frogeye Sprites that color. I found the  original BMC/BL code from Dan's link above but never ordered paint to try. If you end up using that color I'd be interested in how it turns out.

I did just now find the BU-1 on the fabulous Excel spreadsheet you posted (love that spreadsheet - thank you).  Basic question when painting if I may.  What is needed for a full proper finished application?  One or most of these?  Acrylic Enamel, Urethane Base Coat, Acrylic Urethane, Acyrlic Lacquer

also if I may.. what is the different in the two Tahiti Blues ('74 - '80)  and ('96 - '00)?

I only spray in a urethane base coat with urethane clear coat.

Difference between the two is probably slight variation in tint, metallic, pearls, ect...

Well, I've searched this site, the web and everywhere else and have come to the conclusion that Old English White is pretty hard to accurately define.  I have some wheels that I'd like to paint up in OEW and would like to find a formula to give to the local paint suppler.  Has anyone on here done a mix of OEW recently and is able to provide the details?  WT3 is the BL code, but I'm looking for a modern formula.

Thanks for the help.

Pepper white is close with a bit less yellow in it. I prefer it personally. You'll find many colors have several variations over the years so it does become difficult to track down the perfect "OEW".   If you want a specific year of it I'd suggest autocolorlibrary which I've linked somewhere in here and have them mix for a specific year based off their charts.

Thanks for the pointers.  I was able to use a code  at the local supplier today so we'll see how well it comes out.  For those who are interested, here are the multiple different codes I came up with for OEW...

OEW Paint Codes
Glasso - 5324
ICI - 2379 or maybe ICI 2379/2122
Wiborg - 18580
Pinchin Johnson -CHW 8
Ditzler/PPG - 8177
Rinshed Mason - 6642
DuPont- 8207
GM - 5415 (maybe same as PPG 8177)
BMW Mini Pepper White - Mini 850/ BMW 850
Volvo California white 42 or 042
BASF - WT03
Jaguar OEW - PPG/Ditzler 8233/8894

One formula I found.
Valspar Omega 2K Low VOC Polyurethane Formula:
W51 429.9
Y77 42.3
K76 27.7
852C85 323.4

Our local supplier deals with BASF so I ended up ordering the WT03.  If there is any formula info on the can I will post it up later.

Tim.
