Title: The Restoration-Mini 10 year anniversary BBQ April 12-14 2019
Post by: 94touring on March 11, 2018, 05:00:47 PM
Decided to start the planning a year in advance, a year and a month technically!  I looked at the calender and chose the 12-14th of April 2019. That falls on a Friday to Sunday.  The weather tends to be a bit better in April as well.  The goal as of now is to start getting a head count so I can pre plan a few things I have in mind.  I'm in search of nearby roads for some spirited drives. Bruce has mentioned a few very close to my shop that I already planned to scope out. We'd be for sure grilling and eating at the shop.  There is an option for staying either North in Bartlesville (15-20 minutes from the shop) or staying downtown Tulsa which is 30 minutes from the shop. Anyone staying downtown would likely hit up a local eatery of our choosing and any number of bars within walking distance afterwards.  Anyone staying in Bartlesville is welcome to join the downtown group and then have huge bonfires at the shop till the wee hours.  Anyone is welcome to camp at the shop or call dibs on the shop Murphy bed. Cots in the shop are fine too. In between driving and eating, there could be some wrenching to be had. Oil changes, car buffing, wheel bearings, window rubber, or anything you feel you'd want to do or can talk me into doing.  Maybe we have some horseshoes or something in the yard to do as well.  I'd also like to get information regarding the cars you're bringing, such as condition, upgrades, drums or disc, ballast vs non ballest, things you'd like to do someday, ect...  This is obviously way in advance so no rush at the moment, but keep it in mind.

I'm in, no idea what I'll be driving.....TBD!  :--)

I think that just means you'll be the guy at the shop doing all the oil changes if you're mini-less.

Depending on where life has taken me near that time, I'm in.

Currently, I have been taking the year to adjust to the family losses.  I'm starting to think about getting back to full time work.

Current plan is to still have the Moke.

this sounds fun Dan .  I will have my mini since it runs now , hopefully I will have the seats in by then for the 200 mile trek. I have a year , hahaha.  I think I may just drink some beer and watch everyone work on minis though.

Our calender is now marked for this.  Will definitely bring the mini, if I have it together by then.  If I do, the good thing is it shouldn't need any more work.

Bruce do you remember what roads you had a blast on over here in my neck of the way?  I drove around for a couple hours the other day but only found one good section.  A lot of curvey gravel roads if anyone wants to rally though!

This sounds like a great idea, but as jedduh01 said, the kids throw a wrench into the idea...  Currently 4 kids and only one running mini.  maybe if I can get the Moke running by then...  but lets face it 2000kms with four kids in two Mini's is my idea of fun, but maybe not my wife's. ::)

I doubt there's any enticement that would overcome 2 or 4 small kids in a Mini for 2000 kilometers, but many of us flat tow our cars long distances - so 4 kids in a Minivan towing a Mini might be do-able!   4.gif

My wife is laughing thinking about the kids in the Mini while we stay in the van.  We usually do the flat tow with our minivan.  Just not as fun.  We'll be flat towing to MME this July.  Maybe I convince my dad for a Cannonball type run next April.... :D

To be clear, I think I liked the roads because of what they were not.  The were not dead straight roads next to flat farm land with 90 degree bends around property lines.  So I was pleasantly surprised they were somewhat interesting.

I think I went, from your shop, west on 2300, north on 2007, west on 2075, continuing west on 11

You may have found the only good section.

Google Maps seems to show some others a bit further north by northwest from there as well - between the Arkansas River and Skiatook Lake.

I need to keep going north on 97.  The problem with most roads around skiatook lake is they're gravel.

What I have done in the past is use Google Maps (or MapQuest) to find the "squiggly line" road candidates, then plot a possible route and preview drive it in my daily driver to see what condition the roads are in.

I usually have a main plan and a couple alternates in case the main route turns out to have gravel/dirt roads or too rough of pavement.

The truck has been all over the area searching squiggly line roads.  So far have 3 decent spots, though fairly short sections.

Count us (2) in on the BBQ wrenching/drives. I hope to bring our 73 saloon and the 63 pup. The 73 needs at least a new floor but rather have you look at it for the rest. The pup at least a respray. Do you have room to park the Beast (F250 and a long trailer? What direction from Tulsa is your shop? I will get in touch with Midtown Minis to see where some of their drives are in or around Tulsa.

Back on the topic of mini meets...wanted to toss this idea out there.  I'd need to call and get some more information from Hallet, but would there be any interest in renting the track? We'd have to split the cost amongst those who sign up.  Here is the link with prices and info.  Looking to gather interest and ideas from you guys.

I'd like to do a track day, but I doubt my car will be ready by then.....OTOH I can always run the Clubman.

So it looks like about $350 each base for 5 cars, then addl expense for track workers, ambulance and such?

Post by: 94touring on July 02, 2018, 04:39:33 PM
So I'm not sure if we can "compete" on the test day rental.  It may be the $3850 price tag, but unlimited cars.  7-10 cars would make it tolerable.  I'd need to see if all the options are included in that price or if they are extra.  Not that we need crew members and flag people.   I'd be tempted to bring a couple cars if that were the case.

Anything the rest of us can do to help pull this event off?

Maybe start a list of who's coming, get a bulk rate set up at a hotel? (Bartlesville?) The Holiday Inn Express I stayed at was nice and had plenty of room in the parking lot for trailers and such.

Ok so I will need a list of folks and I'd like a bunch of details and info on your cars.  I'll likely get a group rate at the aloft downtown but can look into Bartlesville too. Kinda depends where people want to stay and how many attend.  The shop is available too.

Being that it is still 8 months out, it is a bit too early for me to absolutely commit to going.  I do not know what my "work" situation is evolving into for even totally committing to the October Dyno-day.  (I am attempting to get more contracting work "locally" as well as being under consideration for a full-time job in Orlando, Florida.)

I really want to go to both the October Dyno-day and the 10-year Anniversary.

I also do not know what my "car" situation will be in April 2019.  Currently it is the Moke and a 2016 MINI Clubman.

I'll be there, I will probably be driving my 2009 Clubman towing the Racing Green Mini.....

I'll also commit for Don, he'll be driving his Vtec Pup.

If you could, please edit the title of the thread with the dates?

Since I've been so into tuning lately and have enjoyed seeing what my cruise air fuel ratios are, if I were to fab up a tail pipe wideband that is quickly interchangeable on cars, any of you want to see what your normal driving ratios are? Top end too for that matter.

I'm thinking a pipe that slides over the end of the tailpipe with bung to put the sensor in.  I even have a spare pipe I bought in case I needed to modify my exhaust the other day. One end is to fit over a rc40 diameter exhaust.  I suppose I could make adapters for various sized exhaust, or if everyone gave me their dimensions I can have them ready.  Then it's just a matter of clamping wires to the battery and running the gauge harnes to the front for me to look at while the other person drives.  Then we make adjustments!

I was talking about this with Mark earlier today.  I was thinking I'd like to copy what Dan is doing to get the mixture right. But I don't have a way to weld a bung into the exhaust. Then I discovered they sell a no-weld oxygen sensor bung that I was considering as a possible future project.

https://www.jegs.com/p/AEM/AEM-No-Weld-O2-Sensor-Mount/1334708/10002/-1

I like Dan's idea of an easily interchangeable sensor.  But I'm not sure how much trial and error time would be needed to get things right.  Many attempts I would think.  And maybe new needles too.   Seems like it would be tough to get things right over a weekend - if that's what is being proposed.  Or maybe just an exploratory look at how the carb is set up is what you are thinking?

Well assuming everyone is in the ballpark, it doesn't take much time to make adjustments honestly.  I was doing runs behind the shop, taking TWIN carbs apart, testing oil viscosity, adjusting jet heights with calipers, syncing, and filing two needles at a time across the whole band.  And it took me a few hours doing it for my first time having no experience.  If we go out, take notes where it's rich/lean, do a full wide open pull, come back, someone pulls those needles or adjust mixture one way or another while the next car goes out, it could be done very efficiently.  Odds are most everyone only needs a small tweak here and there.  Or you go ok cool I probably need a new needle.

Or if people want bungs welded in permanently, bring your finest bung and I will weld thee.  Bring an 02 sensor kit or plug for said bung.

I can loan an exhaust pipe clamp that Innovate makes and I have an extension cable to go with.
I was pretty disappointed with the LM2 but still have all the pieces.

Remind me closer to the event and I will ship it wherever it needs to go.
Bit of a long drive for me.

EDIT:
I will post some comments on the Innovate LM2 in another post to keep this focused on the event.

Odds are I'll be at the shop the 11th and the 15th too.  If people get in early or stay later, there's plenty of time to really dive into tuning.  May be wise to figure out what needle you currently have and get a leaner profile, same profile (just in case), and richer profile.  Along with a blue and red spring.  Vizard says start lean and file it down as required.  You can't add thickness to make it leaner, though you have jet adjustments and room for error.

I'd like to get a head count if people could please say if they're able to make it.

Do people prefer to stay downtown Tulsa or north in Bartlesville? The shop is in bfe and closest civilization with hotels is north in B town 20 minutes, or south in T town 30 minutes.  I can get decent rates at the A-loft downtown, a block from my house and walking distance from restaurants/bars.  If anyone wants to stay at the shop, there is a twin bed available as well.

Sounds like we should book Bartlesville asap?

I do NOT recommend the Motel 6 in B'ville!

There are plenty of name brand hotels right along 75, including a Hampton Inn, Fairfeild Inn, Candlewood, Holiday Inn Express, DaysInn and Econolodge. Prices range from $55 to $87/night.

There is never a bad time to Moke.. only a bad choice of clothing while Driving the Moke!

Keep a rain suit in one of the Panniers (frog togs) are my choice.

Dave, did you say you've stayed at that Holliday Inn up there?  Maybe everyone shoots for that if you know it's decent.

It's the most expensive of the three - I'm thinking Candlewood might be the best deal.

BTW, I started a list - 2nd post in this thread....
Dave you are going to have to remove me from the list as I can't make it that weekend. I kept thinking my other plans were another weekend but when I checked again they were the same. Hopefully I will make more money that weekend.

sorry we'll miss you Galen, I'll amend the list.

The Candlewood or Holiday Inn Express seem good options.

I'm planning on attending.  My job will have me working my butt off through the end of March, then *poof* I'll be suddenly retired.  So I'm in.   I will probably take my MINI rather than my Mini, just to avoid the hassle.

The part of this I'm having trouble with is the "working my butt off"....I mean, they're "firing" you so you're going to work your butt off for them? I'd be in cruise mode till the last day......I mean, what are they going to do? Fire you? Put it on your permanent record?  ;D

What hassle? Driving Emma? Bring them both? I probably will flat tow the Racing Green car down.

Glad you're coming!  4.gif

But there's a rub.  As much as I would sincerely like to go the full Johnny Paycheck route, they've got something on me: I stand to collect a nice severance package of 1/2 year of salary. So I need to mind my Ps and Qs and jump through all the hoops they put in front of me.  It's a bit like Huey Lewis sang: "I'm taking what they're giving 'cause I'm workin' for a livin' "

I suppose my present feeling of having hassles is what I'm projecting into the future. But I'm sure as soon as I retire it will immediately be all rainbows and unicorns, right?

Ok so I will need a list of folks and I'd like a bunch of details and info on your cars.

Attendee's list is started on post #2

'89 Racing Green - 1275, HIF44, K&N filter, electronic ign, 8.4" discs, 13" wheels, aluminum rocker cover.

Bog stock AFAIK.

Ipock - 69 Pup, Honda D16 Vtec, 10" wheels, 7.5" brakes, everything refreshed recently.

I have the wideband ordered and on the way to those who want to see how their tune is.  I have a variety of small items to give away or raffle and one bigger item to raffle if it suits anyone.  And if no one wants it, I'll keep it for my next build!

I am running very similar to Mini Dave's set-up

1275, HIF44, K&N filter, electronic ign, 8.4" discs, 12" wheels, aluminum rocker, road cam, magnaflow exhaust

Here are some dyno photos pre-exhaust.  I think I have a vacuum advance issue with my dizzy

I asked Dan as our man on the ground to check out a couple of places - last time I was down there I stayed at the Motel 6 as it was on the very south edge of B'ville - what a huge mistake! None of the door key cards worked so anytime I wanted to leave or return to my room I had to get the desk person to lock/unlock the door for me.....the place was in terrible condition and right on the main road so there was a lot of traffic noise too.

So that we don't repeat my mistake I asked Dan to look at a couple of places before we reserve a block of rooms, the Candlewood and Holiday Inn Express that Don and I stayed at are both well back off the main road. Also, I've since learned from my world traveling brother - you stay on the top floor, that way you never have someone bounding across your ceiling at all hours like a herd of elephants - I had always booked a room on the ground floor as it was easier for me to get the dogs in and out - but that's not an issue on this trip!

They also have a Hampton and I've always been happy with them......

Still working on the moke. Coopertune still has not yet started to work on the mini. Major oil leak since I got it from him and also a low down knocking noise to find.

We could do that.  My current plan is to leave San Antonio early Thursday the 11th and drive all the way in one long day.  I can pause on the way through Dallas to meet and caravan on from there.

We'll confirm arrangements closer to the date?

Hmm.  Trying to figure out how to post pictures here.  Oh well.  Let's presume I can't figure out how to use the inter web here in 2019... The photo which would have been attached is of my Pup, sitting out in front of what the state of Texas does well... sells GUNS & AMMO.   I didn't buy any, but rather thought the scene was a good backdrop for a quick snapshot while the others were across the street fueling up their Minis during the March 2017 drive to Texas Hill Country.  I'm looking forward to this Spring's BBQ and maybe I can make up for having only posted a couple times of the forum.  -don

Hey, that's not fair to say that about Texas.   It's not just guns & ammo.

It's guns & ammo and barbeque.

Dave - put me (Aaron M) down as a maybe. I'm in the survival years with 7 mo old twins, a 3 yr old, and a 40 yr old mini that's not quite running well  9.gif, so I will continue to try and get it running decent before then but we'll have to see. I at least would like to come out and meet you guys, see your cars, and learn more as I'm a newbie to the classics. 71.gif

Just got my schedule for next month.  I'll be back from work the night of the 9th, which will give me a couple days to get things setup and organized at the shop.  So anyone around the 11th I will be at the shop.  I will actually stay there that week rather than drive back and forth to downtown where I live.

Are there any places to get a beer in Ramona besides the pizza place on the corner? Any cool little dive bars nearby? We all should be in by late afternoon of the 11th....

There is absolutely nothing in Ramona.  A bank, simple simons pizza, and post office.  I will stock the shop with plenty of beer that week.

And still growing!

The only thing the shop needs is a good high speed wifi set up, then we could beam the event world wide via web cam!  ;D

Or at least go online with a laptop...... ::)

Yeah Ramona doesn't have high speed intrawebz, and even if it did I couldn't justify the cost vs how little I'd use it there.

It was great fun driving the Innocenti down to the shop withe the crew on Saturday.  Now I know where I'm headed for the big party in a few weeks!  It was super fun helping to take the car apart too.  Thanks for the pizza, Dan!

Speaking of the big party, I'll plan on baking a lot of cookies to bring.  (So if the Mini breaks down on the way there, I won't starve to death, right??!!)  Seriously, this is by far the longest trip I've made with her!  It should be fine!

See you all soon!

Idle isn't accurate but cruise it reads about 1 to 1.5 leaner and WOT it's pretty accurate, within 0.5 at worse.  I took some fiberglass and wrapped where the pipes slide over one another to prevent fresh air from contaminating the sensor as well.  The most difficult part is it doesn't stay steady on the gauge like the sensor off the headers. If I see 14:5 at cruise on my permanent sensor, its easy to read, but the Aux sensor is going between 15:5-16:1 rapidly.  But it works well enough to give an idea if someone is pig rich or dangerously lean at both cruise and WOT.  Will also be easier with a dedicated driver and not me driving, holding the Aux gauge in my hand, and reading both gauges.  Doing 100mph.

The Indian National Turnpike is one of the bumpiest, crappiest stretch of road I have ever encountered.   I have taken it several times before and deeply regreted that I had paid the toll for the privelege of being beat up each time.  And it's much worse when you are towing something.  Plus, for most of the length of it there a nothing but small berm between the opposing lanes of traffic - dangerous as hell and I've seen some accidents where a car had been launched over the berm. So we will not be taking that, even though it is technically shorter.  Instead we will go through Muskokee, then Broken Arrow, and then head into Tulsa.

Agreed the right lane especially is bumpy and yes I thought that berm was about the dumbest road idea I've ever seen.  Since the left lane is the smoothest but closest to oncoming death.  Good thing is the times I've been on it I've seen maybe 20 cars.

I'm thinking of taking 48 just north of Durant.  We take a stretch of this when we go to KS.  2 lanes only, not a lot of shoulder either.  Fairly smooth and light traffic.

If you guys are towing then the main road is probably best bet.  See y'all there tomorrow.

I'm in 416....

We got in about 5:30, checked into the hotel and headed down to Dan's shop, about 20 min or so south of us. Dan and Jen hosted us with some brats and fried bologna and other fine Oklahoma treats and we just hung out and told war stories till Bruce and Michael came rolling in about 8:30. Now we're all back at the hotel and planning for breakfast tomorrow and then a good Mini run after.

More as it happens!

After working in the shop all day on a rainy windy Sat, we all met up for dinner....and a great time was had by all!

Tomorrow we'll all be heading out our various directions home, I'll drop by the shop to pick up whatever loose bits we left there, then load up and head north to KC

We got a lot done today despite the weather, Susan's heater got hooked up but we'll have to order some bits to make her horn work properly.

We got Aamanley's car to run significantly better - partly by getting his throttle cable adjusted so that it opened all the way! He also put in an aluminum radiator and did some tuning.

Seth went away unfulfilled - he had hoped to install a short shift kit but it turned into a bigger job than anticipated, so he'll do it at home.

We got the subframes installed back in the Innocenti, as soon as Dan can get a moment in his incredibly busy schdule he'll finish up the doors and boot/bonnet lids and it will head back to my shop, I hope by then I have the engine going back together or even running.

We had a great time here at the shop, lots of people drove their Minis and we all had a great time meeting and hanging out with Dan! (and Jen!)

Let's not wait another 10 years for the next great RM BBQ!

Michael and I left Dan's shop late this morning and headed south to Texas.  Only 20 minutes into our journey on Hwy 75 a speeding car driving erratically lost control right in front of Michael, nearly taking him out in the process as it spun and then ended up on the side of the road where it hit a highway sign.  All this on a sunny clear day.   Fortunately there was no car to car contact.  But it was definitely a pucker moment - evasive maneuvers are very limited when towing.   I was following behind and saw it all happen up ahead, and I had my new dashcam running too.   I'll have to figure out how to get the video on here...

O what fun. Glad all is good.

I stayed solo at the shop and got my engine cleaned and painted.  Then forgot to grab my goodies off the cart.  Left around 230 and with a stop for food and a delay at a one lane bridge light it was smooth sailing.

Had a wonderful time and was great to meet everyone and wrench on some cars.

Don and I headed north about the same time....we had a nice easy drive under sunny skies. Our only "moment" was when a giant Dodge Ram passed us both across a double yellow line, even tho there was nothing coming it was still nerve wracking.

We had a great time too, next week I'll be back at it again.

Here's the dashcam video of the crazy driver.  Most of the action happened right in front of Michael, and I was filming from a distance behind him.

Basically I am doing about 70 mph, and a Chrysler Crossfire passes me on the left and begins to pull into my lane ahead of me.  Before the Chrysler is even out of the left lane a Buick Lacrosse blows past it, then quickly passes Michael in his Jeep towing his Moke.  The Buick then encounters two pickup trucks, one in each of the lanes in front of Michael.  Only then did the Buick seem to realize it could not fit between the pickups and it slams on the brakes, loses control and swerves rapidly left and right in true tank slapper fashion. Then it spins out onto the right shoulder and strikes a highway sign.  I've looked frame by frame and as I was passing the spun out Buick and its reverse lights are already on!  It it backed out into traffic just after I got by it.    Whew!

I ended up driving all the way through to San Antonio and made it home about 10:00pm.  Just now catching up on a few things before bed.

The car that spun out just blew right past me and barely missed ramming both pickups in the rear - by inches at most.  The driver had to really stomp the brakes such that the rear almost left the ground.  Then he/she fish-tailed while sliding and spun out directly in front of me.  I just held straight, applied steady brakes to keep my rig under control and prepared to t-bone the idiot.  I got lucky in that he spun/slid on over and off the road.

The rest of the drive home was uneventful.

I'll unload the Moke from the trailer in the morning.

We were able to get your air/fuel dialed in, a new needle put in, throttle cable lingage fixed, timing set, coolant flushed, new coil, cap, arm, plug wires, and a 2nd hand alloy radiator that was perfectly fine along with new lower hose installed.  Next up is getting the wobbles taken care of in the suspension.

exactly right! We did a lot! Truly appreciative. I discovered last night that two freeze plugs were now leaking. I guess I maybe got the insides a little too clean thus creating an escape for some coolant.

So freeze plugs and the wobbles next.

I'll prob start a post (like Susan's and Don's) soon detailing some of what has been done for those that are interested.

Except for the people, the row of cars looks like a set of the tiny toy cars you would find in an elaborate train set diorama/model.
