Title: Wanted: old 848cc crank/primary gear c-ring 2A3597
Post by: skeeter on November 14, 2017, 12:25:46 PM
I'm rebuilding my 1962 848cc engine and accidentally broke the c-ring that holds the primary gear in place. It's the early engine with the pre-"Deva" oil-fed bush primary gear and slightly smaller crank (1 3/8" instead of 1 1/2") ... also, on these, there's no backing ring between the c-ring and gear. Part number is 2A3597

I have a later c-ring (22A319) but it's loose on the crank and I bet the flywheel won't fit either.

I've combed the web; a couple of places list the older part, but nobody has one and probably hasn't for years.

Anyone out there that may have one lying around?

I think your only hope is to find someone with an old engine to get one off of.......

Dumb question:  If one can't be found, could the broken one possibly be repaired?  If not, could it be used as a pattern to have a new one machined?

Thanks for the replies, folks! I've looked into having one made, but it's prohibitively expensive (>$300) unless I go for a larger quantity (5 for $550, 10 for $850) but I seriously doubt I could cover my costs.

As for repairing, I had a welder take a look but he said it would be very tricky to do and there's no guarantee it would hold. Because there's no backing ring on these older cranks, one surface of the c-ring is effectively a thrust surface when the clutch is disengaged. A weld could end up damaging the primary gear itself.

I've already done a lot of work and spent a lot of money on this rebuild; I'm determined to see it through and keep the car as original as possible, i.e., a stock 850. Very few left these days!

Cheers all,

- brian

I may have one i'll look tomorrow. I have 2 or 3 old 850s not sure the crank size or if the c rings are there.

I could make you one at a lower cost if it comes to it

Dave, thanks, I called Jim ... alas, he only has the larger c-ring for the later crank.

Jeff, the c-rings look identical, but the earlier ones fit a crank slot of 1.2" whereas the later ones are more like 1.3"

Jedduh01, I called Steve ... super guy, and yes, he keeps almost everything ... *except* parts from an 850 rebuild that the guy wanted to take with him. He's pretty sure it was the older "wet-tail" crank and is trying to find out if he still has the ring.

Great forum; you guys are amazing!

On the Bring a Trailer site, the commenter called SM Minis is extremely knowledgeable about all things Mini and he often talks about the treasure trove he has of early Mini parts (and cars too).  I'm not sure how to contact him, (the BAT site does not have PMs), but I know his first name is Randy and he's based in Colorado.   If you could find some way to contact him, he would probably have the part you are looking for.

Thanks Bruce, I subscribed to that site and I'll see if I can contact Randy somehow.

For anyone who thinks they might have one, I've attached a photo of my broken c-ring. The later ones look identical; the best way of telling the difference is the "slot" measurement with is 1.2" on mine and 1.3" on the later ones.

If anyone has an earlier one and wants to swap with the later one I'd gladly oblige!

Cheers all!

No go mine was 1.34 I wonder what type of steel it is making one seems easy if the steel can be had in sheet form.
