Title: Thread size for SAE cone compressor?
Post by: MPlayle on October 15, 2017, 01:54:38 PM
Anyone know the thread size for the SAE version of the Mini cone compressor tool?

I have a cone compressor tool, but it is just for the later metric cones.  It will work fine for installing the new cones on the Moke, but does not fit the old ones that need to come out.

If someone knows the thread size and will post here, I think I can get a length of "all-thread" and make one for getting the old cones out.

Thanks,
Michael Playle

Michael, if you can wait a little bit, I'll be visiting the San Antonio area in 3 weeks and I can bring my cone compression tool to lend you.  It's dual thread so it would fit your needs.

Just FYI, the thread size is 1/2-20 (1/2" fine thread - coarse is 1/2-13) - your local Fastenal will probably have a length of it.

Bruce and Dave,

Thanks guys!

Bruce,

That would be greatly appreciated.  I am going to pull the subframe from the shell this week in order to try to get the shell fully stripped and off to the scrapper.  I won't be fully disassembling the subframe just yet, so borrowing your tool for a day would be great.  Let me know when you are coming down and I'll give you my number for arranging to meet.

Dave,

I'll be stopping by one of the local Fastenal places this week to order/buy a few odd bolts, so I'll check on a length of all thread as well.

Cheers to you both!

Before you scrap the frame contact M-Machine to see if they want any bits from it. They bought my FE tag and the spare tire mount off the back.

Brad,

All of the bits off the old shell are transferring to the new shell: seats, spare tire mount, lights, subframes, etc.  If I can remove it, I'll try to refurbish and reuse it is the approach I'm taking.

It is only the bare shell that I am scrapping as it is a mess of patches-on-patches-on-patches.  All of the patches are plain flat steel and some of those are showing signs of more rust.

They bought the spare tire mount that I cut out of the body. The FE tag was welded to the inner fender on the right side, it had to be drilled/cut out also. So not stuff that is just easily removable.

Michael, I'll be in the SAT area the weekend of 4-5 Nov.  So we can meet some time then.  You are welcome to hold onto the tool throughout your project so no rush in getting it back to me.

Thanks Bruce.

I have the "Metric Only" tool and it fits the new cones I have ready for going back in.  I just don't have something for the old cones coming out.
