At least the seller showed some photos of the rust - even if he is trying to pooh-pooh how bad it really is.

Did they come with black bumpers?

Yes. Many Mini models had them. Primarily the stripper models like the City.   Also black door handles and boot handle.

My door handles and boot handles are black. Does this indicate a model year?

Not that I know of.   Blacked out trim was in vogue as an automotive styling trend in the late 70s and early 80s to sort of indicate a sporty car.  And in that time frame Austin/Rover adopted for the Mini -  I believe it was a cost saving measure.   But later on it was used on some special edition Minis in the late 80s like the tennis-themed Mini Advantage. And others too.   So, no way at all to tell what year.

Funny how car "fashion" comes back around with the  blacking out craze for cars that started in the mid 2000's

Yeah. I remember it starting with the 1979 Mazda 626.   (but that may not have been the first one)  Black window trim, black trim around the lights, black mirrors, etc.

I think it started with Porsche - 911's had blacked out trim around the windows and black door handles in 1973........

Also for sale on BaT, this 6 speed Porsche 968.....the interesting thing for me on this car is the orange wrap in lieu of a fresh paint job. what do you guys think about wrapping a car rather than paint - the wrap job cost $4200!

I'm going to see this one Sat morning.....Don's been having so much fun with his little Midget that I'm tempted to get a tiny roadster too...but I like the looks and accessibility of the engine better on the Spitty....and this one has factory overdrive and a removable hardtop! One of the things driving this decision is the quality of ride in Don's Midget, it's as he calls it - like driving a Lincoln next to his Pup or even modern MINI. Very easy to drive, feels like power steering, rides smoothly and of course - convertible!

I can't decide tho on one of the later more available cars or the earlier ones without the huge bumpers.......

So did you see the Spitfire today?
Title: Re: Cars for Sale on CL or Ebay - or BaT
Post by: MiniDave on November 11, 2017, 09:24:23 PM
No, Don and I are going tomorrow morning - it was raining all day today but is supposed to be dry tomorrow. Pics and driving impressions when I get home.......

The owner says it has a factory hardtop, and I'm intrigued by the opening rear vent windows. Also, I had not seen a Spitfire with overdrive - I knew they had it in the GT6 and other TR's, but I did not know they even offered it in the Spitty.....should be fun to see how it works compared to Don's Midget, since they have the same engine, similar weight and so on.......

So I went to see this Spitty this morning with Don, we were both impressed with the overall condition of the car, it looks like a true 40K mile original car.

That said, it would still need a ton of work to make me happy - it has oil leaks (I know, what British car doesn't....) and the carb was overhauled but the choke is clearly not set right, it took a lot to get it started and once it did it had to warm up thoroughly before it would take any throttle.....once there it ran smoothly and pulled - well, weakly. It has good compression so I think either the timing was way off or something else is going on with it. The driving of the car was fine - it rode, steered, shifted and braked just fine, and it was relatively rattle free. The overdrive worked flawlessly in both 3rd and 4th as it should and all in all I think it would be  good car to buy for the right price. Don says it runs pretty much like his Midget did before he put the two barrel Weber on it, but it seemed really slow to me.....so maybe that would also need to be done.

BUT......

With the hard top on it was almost impossible for me to get in and out of the car. Once in the ergonomics were pretty good for me but getting in and out......man. I think I need to look at bigger cars, like an MGB or a TR-6. However, getting in and out of my E-Type is a challenge too, so it may not help. Maybe I'm just too old and fat for these tiny little cars any more......it's even harder to get in and out of Don's Midget but once in there seems to be plenty of room to stretch out.

I'll stay with my Mini, I definitely fit in it.   ;D

Another Spitty came up on my radar, I will try and go look at it early next week just for fun......it's a whole lot less expensive that the white one I didn't buy......

Not meaning to dampen your enthusiasm (pun realized as the pictures were taken in the rain) ...

If you had trouble getting in and out of the white Spitfire, what makes you think this dark one will be any different for getting in and out?

Title: Re: Cars for Sale on CL or Ebay - or BaT
Post by: MiniDave on November 19, 2017, 05:06:05 PM
We're going to try it with the top off, plus this one is 1/2 the asking price of the other one.....if nothing else maybe I can play with it for a bit and sell it in the spring and make a little money.......interesting that they both have the factory hardtop, but I don't think this one has the o'drive.

One wonders what the seller is trying to obscure with all the black-&-white flag photoshopping besides just the background of his house.

This Mini is interesting because it has air conditioning and it is not RHD.  So, not the typical Japanese-spec Mini.   I don't think I've seen very many like this.

I guess I could be gracious and not be judgmental.  And note that everyone has different tastes, and to each his own.

But then I'd miss the opportunity to say what a complete load of crap this is.

Apparently there is a Mini Van hiding under this amorphous pink marshmallow.

PROFESSIONALLY RE-WIRED - COMPLETED ON 17the February 2018
240V COMPRESSOR RAN FREEZER
READY TO WORK (JUST NEEDS ICE CREAM)
EXCELLENT ENGINE
COMES WITH DETACHABLE A-FRAME FOR TOWING
ONE OF ONLY VERY FEW MADE BY VENDAVAN
ONLY A COUPLE ARE STILL THOUGHT TO SURVIVE
You are looking at a Classic car business opportunity that's probably the only one of its kind. Ready to work straight away in time for the spring and new show season
This ice cream van is based on the Mini Hustler kit car from the late 1970`s which is very rare in itself and un-heard of in an ice-cream van format. It's actually called made and registered as a VENDAVAN (Ice-Star) which They used the legendary Austin mini running gear and subframes, electrics, Brakes and most mechanical parts so working on these is incredibly easy and mechanical parts availability is second to none.
The hustler was best known for its 6 wheels which basically is normal Austin mini front subframe arrangement with engine driving the front wheels and two mini rear subframes back to back at the rear giving the 6 wheels. It has a 1,000cc mini engine that has been replaced recently and in excellent mechanical order with good gearbox, Clutch and brakes.
As you can see in the pictures the Ice-Cream van is built to a good standard and is a purpose-built van that's never been anything else other than an Ice-Cream van. It has very good standing height inside with a sliding glass serving hatch with various shelfs, Sink and working area. The freezer is powered by 240 Volt mains hook-up (Cable included) that plugs into the dashboard and powers the freezer. The Van has just had a full professional electric re-wire to ensure it is in the best condition possible in relation to the wiring loom etc
The freezer is excellent and of strong commercial type that is compressor run which freezes quickly and will kick in and out all day keeping the freezer frozen. It has two folding access hatches on the top and is very large inside giving more than enough room to supply ice cream to a busy show field for the day.
Some of the things included with the van
It has a built-in sink and small water supply to wash hands the soap holder etc.
Twin interior working lights which give a good working light inside the van
Everything needed to get started including two boxes of cones, One double, One single, Selection of Ice-Cream toppings and even two bags of hundreds and thousands and a huge bag of ice cream spoons. There is even cleaning stuff and a good quality Ice-Cream scoop.
The van has glass all around so looks great and is very eye catching, the drivers sliding panel has been replaced at some point with Perspex which looks good and does the job but ideally could do with replacing with glass at some point.
The Van has a detachable A-frame with effectively when fitted makes it a giant trailer with a wooden mountain on the rear for trailer lights. The A-frame is very easy to install with just two pins sliding into a supporting pole, obviously due to its size and relatively small engine its only really cut out for local running around and the A-frame and van being towed by a larger more modern vehicle makes sense for larger distances.
It's in very good running order and is a very reliable usable old van. It starts easily, sounds well and is quite entertaining to drive, obviously it's only for short journeys but is quite happy on the road, the attention it gets is beyond any other vehicle we have owned.
The bodywork on the van is over all very tidy. It's been painted a few times in its life I would imagine but being fiberglass, it won't rust, and the underneath is in very good order, it does have the odd small scuff as it's a used van but it's very solid and looks overall very good. It's not a stunning show car so please don't think that it is. It's a tidy usable van.
To sum up the overall condition of the van is over all very tidy and usable. It's not a stunning show vehicle and could do with bits and pieces doing to tidy it up. It's very reliable and usable and will earn you money you anywhere whether it be selling ice cream or as an advertisement for your company. Please feel free to come and inspect/test drive the before bidding but please remember as I have previously said its obviously not cut out for long distance motorway traveling and we recommend towing or transporting it over larger distances.
There is a small folder of old receipts of expenditure and invoices and old MOTs etc
VIEWING HIGHLY RECOMMENDED AND WELCOMED
Please only genuine bidders and no timewasters as I will pursue them for my listing fee and report to eBay.
If the vehicle cannot be collected within two days I must receive a £50 deposit via pay pal to secure, and it must be collected no later than 7 days after auction ends.
THE CAR IS IN HOLWELL NORTH WALES

PRICE IS NEGOTIABLE! MAKE ME A GOOD OFFER!!

Up for sale is a 1983 Austin Mini Cooper. These are pretty cool cars and rare. The great mechanical and body condition in itself is rare!
One of the most attractive micro cars, and it may be micro but its comfortable enough to fit all the seats comfortably!

This Car drives exceptionally well, you can take it to the car shows & for weekend cruises. Definitely gets a lot of attention & questions at the cars and coffee. The Mini is powered by it's 1000cc engine, It moves pretty quick! It has a 4 speed manual transmission. Engine Bay is well detailed. Has a nice exhaust that sounds really nice. See the video.
When you are driving in this 1983 Mini there is a certain sense of nostalgia that you cannot help but notice. The Wooden dash and classic looking gauges makes you feel like it is an authentic classic car, but then you get on the throttle and feel the immediate response of a sports car.
It has always been garage kept and well taken care. All the exterior chromes are in great shape. The Interior is splendid and contrast well to the exterior grey paint with black rally stripes. Upholstery has been tastefully done, and overall condition looks super nice. Has the wooden dashboard and trim as well as the wood grain sports steering wheel. Car has 83,000 Kilometers which is about 51,xxx miles, but I will sell it asexempt. This one has a clean Florida title.
I'm located in Grand Prairie, TX about 30 minutes away from the airport. Feel free to come see the car in person. Any inquires email me. $500 non-refundable deposit required within 24hrs of buying. Sold As-is. Thanks for looking.

That's the one John McGee just finished a few months ago, it was in New York (I think) so it's a surprise to see it offered for sale in Texas. It took John a year and a half to finish it, and a month after the guy got it back it was up for sale - so, didn't meet expectations? too noisy? terrible ride? wonder why it sold so quickly - I know the owner has/had way more than $25K in it.
The throttle bodies give it away, I think it's the only one I've seen that has them.

If I were looking for a D series conversion, this is the one I'd want....not for $25 grand mind you.....

Thanks Dave, and thanks to Bruce!

Well, THAT was awfully nerve wracking.  Truth be told, I thought it would or should bring $45K.  I knew stone stock would have bumped the price.  I also knew some might be unsure of provenance.  But the buyer is ecstatic and I'm relieved to have survived the week.

Now.  Who's got a Mk1 shell for sale?  I want to build a racecar:)

Wouldn't it be less expensive to buy a race car and modify it for the class you want to race in?

Hey Dan,

I'm thinking more along the lines of an 850 shell for about $1000.  I know you have a pile of those things.  I might hold out for someone who will pay me to haul it off.
You hang onto that S so if you sell it on BaT, people on can call you silly and stupid, more or less on a regular basis for a week. 4.gif

Dave,

Normally, yes.  But there is so little challenge in that...
(I'm joking)

Velopackrat. Yes i watched the bidding and was wondering if it was going to get where it should be for that level of a build, congrats on the sale.

I know of a 64 MK I shell with sub frame, doors and boot lid that may be for sale in the Orlando Fl area. Top side is good with no front end (was a flip front) it will need floor/sills and boot floor work.

My email address is malsal56@yahoo.com.

Title: Re: Cars for Sale on CL or Ebay - or BaT
Post by: Jimini II on May 11, 2018, 01:38:37 PM
They did not make a lot of UK Mokes, in fact total Moke production of UK, Australian, Portuguese and Italian Mokes was around 28,000 i had heard and a lot of those rotted away. So just like everything else rarity usually (for the most part) means people will pay a premium for the ability to have one and when you get into a bidding war of sorts anything can happen.

That being said the $41k Moke of Marks was a well documented and near perfect restoration with 29 panels being replaced including a full floor and both pontoons correctly spot welded in place and imo would be impossible to duplicate for that price when using a shop to do all the work.
So UK Moke's with welded in patch panels can bring $30k plus, the Australian and Portuguese Mokes do not sell as high as the UK ones.

The Authi Mini on BaT only hit $9K so it did not make reserve....I don't know if it was the 850 motor that held it back or if the owners had $40K Moke visions in their head.....

That is a very tidy little Pup. I just don't fit in one.....for some reason I thought the Aussi Pups had vent windows?

The Aus pup is determined by the 2 simple center switches  Headlights and Wipers  are = UP for on.. (and of different variety)   also there is a ID Plate Under the passenger seat = all matching details that were only given + installed in Aus built cars.

I wish i knew more = or had a better reference for Aus production trucks ..   I think the way they kept this truck very Mk 1 = with External Hinges ,  Normal sliding glass windows + press steel front meant in 72 it was a bastard child of production (stuck in the old)
by 72 it should have ahd roll up internal hinges for normal productions.

Perhaps i should reach out to Grant in Aus.,.. he knows Australian stuff!

This is why BAT scarses Me / US == we dont know alot about this pup!

Agreed on the seating = there is no room for a 'reclined seat.  very upright and ON point driving position for sure!

Even UK Pickups were external hinges and slider windows until their end in about 1982.

The vented, roll up windows on Jim's Pup are Aussie Saloon doors fitted to a UK Pup.  The "older" non-flap latched external hinge Aussie doors are a direct match for the UK external hinge door openings.

Very nice truck!

Toggle switches in a Mini moved Up to turn on stuff?  That is very weird and totally non-British.  Sounds like an American (or Canadian) fitted the switches during a refurb.   Is there documentation that supports the Oz pickups were done that way?

Learning more Daily!

Switches were yes reversed in their holes = Able to flip + they still work. as intended

Digging into the Vin s   XAV1 --  69-74 Pickups  --   Per the internet ...  Fits a 72 Pickup as paperwork matches

Vin Ending in A =   Longbridge... Production

This is a English Pickup.  Nevermind the thoughts of it being a Australian Pickup..
Its pretty , Its flashy = its fun!  and more and more i want to keep it!

I believe any time an ad for a mini is posted it automatically adds the no rust comment.  It's almost cliche.  After assisting in the stripping of my so called rust free Austrailian (cause it's a dry climate right?) mini and finding rust spots and then when Dan finished it and found more along with previous patches for rust, I call BS on anyone claiming that, unless you have photographic restoration proof.  Part of me believes these cars rusted as they left the assembly line.

They should be like Gremlins (the little aliens, not the car)  NEVER, EVER, Get them wet.   ;D

So clearly a candidate for one of the new Heritage Mk1 shells, but other than that it only needs.......everything! Do you think they paid £20K for the vin?

The yellow thing looks like a part from a wheel boot?

The Brits are suffering from collective automotive guilt for very casually sending more than 4 million (!) Minis to the scrapyards over the past decades including many Cooper S models.   Therefore they get hyper nostalgic and very sentimental (and financially foolish) when they actually unearth an old Mk. I  Mini.  And multiply that times 10 if it's a Cooper S.

I got bored, so I started looking for Minis on Craigslist across the country.

Some of these are reasonable, and some are definitely head-scratchers.  But all are interesting for one reason or another.  Sometimes it's the wildly crazy price.  Other times it's the owner's lack of knowledge.  Bonus if it's both!   Enjoy!

I know the guy in OP that has this car for sale, he's a nutter but he had a fistful of Minis and has slowly sold them off. His cars are always every bit as nice as it looks, so this would probably be a good buy.

Did 68's still have external hinges? I thought that's when they went to roll up windows and internal hinges?

I think there were several of these made.  I saw one in Niagara Falls (slowly I turned...) back in the 1980s.  And one in San Antonio in the early 1990s.  Both were sitting outside a Ripley's Believe it Or Not tourist trap.   Could have been the same car, but I don't think so.

How about a Morris Mini from New Zealand, with a Hillman ID plate?

That is very strange, do you think that was done in NZ or by the owner?

Well everyone in NZ would automatically know it is a Mini, so that wouldn't fly there.   I think that points to the plaques having been applied in the US.

I must be missing something.

A couple of days ago a Karmann Ghia sold on BaT for .... $43K.    :-[     Mind you, this was said to be a nice Karmann Ghia - one in which $80K (!) was spent to restore it.   :-\

Hey I like KGs.  When I was in high school a friend of mine had one, and his brother had another.  I think they are very elegantly styled and I love the thin-pillar roof line on the hardtops.  I remember fondly a 800 mile trip with 4 other teenagers all of us stuffed into one Karman Ghia - the car fighting a losing battle in trying to maintain highway speed as we drove into strong head winds in rural Iowa.

But WTF?!   Forty-three fricken large on a later model KG?!  (and it's one with the big bumpers, too!)

Yeah, no question some of the prices on some of the cars sold on BaT defy logic......

80 Large spent on restoration? How? Was there a 50 large rebate left in the glovebox?

If you read some of these descriptions, where someone has spent $10K tp $15K on a service that included an oil change, brake flush and a "tune up" it makes you wonder......

Speaking of BaT shit crazy there is a Caterham 7 up for auction on BaT currently with spread sheet receipts for $135k of which $75k was labour WTH !!!!. It has a few one off tweaks but considering it is a kit car that supposedly takes 40 to 60 hours to build that seems a tad high but judging by the cars stablemates it was a "money is no object" build that seems like the owner can well afford.

Bruce,

I saw his ad for that one on Mini Mania and contacted him about it.  He has had it for a bit, but not yet titled/registered in in Texas under his name.  He has been driving it around on just the import paperwork.  That "red flagged" it for me.

That's a good point.  I understand busy, but if you are going to sell a car model with a history of shady import issues, you'd be best served to get it done.  Especially if you start losing potential buyers over it.
Title: Re: Cars for Sale on CL or Ebay - or BaT

He's tying to save some money by jumping title - he wants whoever buys it to take the import paperwork and title it directly. It's a bad idea and completely illegal. Mike was smart to pass on this one, at least till the title and reg are correct and clear.

Yeah, that's just lazy.  Granted it can be a bit of a hassle getting an appointment to have the VIN inspected by the police, but it's not that difficult to do.  And of course you have to pay sales tax and registration fees too.  But still...

I wonder what insurance he has on it (if any)?   I don't think any insurance company would be happy to know they are insuring an untitled, unregistered car.   Or maybe they'd be thrilled because they won't have to pay out on any claims on it (which, of course, is their very favorite situation).

This series 1.5 E-Type coupe caught my eye, especially the seller's address and screen name, "kmp26race"

Anyone who's read my threads about dyno days and race shops should recognize the name and address of Kent Prather Racing.  77.gif

Turns out the car belonged to one of his customers.

He also had a Ginetta for sale,  that went RNM at $50k, I know the owner wanted $60K for it when I saw it about a year ago at Kent's shop

Yes, I looked before commenting.  I'd actually prefer the Pasha over the pink and purple accents.  But plain grey or black would beat both of them.   But that's why there are choices - everyone has their own idea of what they like.

There's a later Canadian-market Mini on eBay right now.  It's a 1975 and fully into the must-be-federalized to be sold there.

Not that anyone would seek one of these out, but they are very unique and pretty rare since most of them evolved into beater status and long ago rusted away due to winter road salt.

This one is preserved and, scrolling through the photos, you can see what made these Minis so different from any other market in which the Mini was sold.

I used to own a '77 Canadian Mini, and the first thing I did was throw the huge and heavy bumpers right into the dumpster.

Looks a lot like mine.  Same colour scheme.  On my '79 the grill has cut-outs for the signal lights.  I took the CDN bumpers off not just because they were ugly, but the rear one was so heavy it was bending the corners of the boot lid.  That's right, the rear bumper is bolted to the boot lid, weighs quite a bit more than the boot lid, and adds a fair bit of stress to the hinges and cables.  I also can't imagine that a large metal bar with one end inches from the fuel tank is a good bumper.

The best thing about the Canadian Minis ss the reinforced doors.

The doors have a side impact beam inside them, and importantly, a special device that mechanically hooks the bottom of the door to the doorsill below it so as to spread a side impact load across all of the side of the bodyshell - not just the door.

Once BL engineered that useful solution, it should have been adopted on all Minis from 1974 onward. But they were cheap bastards and only had it on the Canadian Mini to meet the Canadian rules.

Me too!   My parents had a '57 MG Magnette from the time I was 0 - 10 years old, so I have a great fondness for that model.  Started my lifelong affection for British cars.

When I was about 8 years old, my family relocated via a crosscountry road trip from Massachusetts to Missouri - all 5 of us in that MG, plus a cat.   The fuel pump went out somewhere in Ohio and it took several days for new one to be found (not too many 'foreign car' shops around those parts apparently).   I can still remember how the leather smelled.  And the secret lever used to open the trunk.

How about a Mini Van with a Clubman front?

It's said to be from Oz (and those doors sure are), but I'm not sure if they made Vans with a flat front in the later years, or if this is owner-made.

It has the cool Rostyle wheels.  And a 'roo bar too!  It takes a brave man to drive a Mini Van with no side mirror on the passenger side.

Anyway, at just over $3K the price seems reasonable.

It is legit.  The last version of the Aussie Van was the square nose just like this.

Usually if has larger rear windows covering the whole "insert" region versus the small "portal" window seen on this one.

I didn't know about the square front on the Vans - thanks.   Regarding the single piece of glass rear side windows installed into the sheet metal on the Oz/NZ vans (such as below), I understood they were not factory. I read somewhere that the Vans were sold as commercial vehicles (at a lower tax) and the windows were aftermarket installed post-sale to turn the Vans into estates.

I know this was done in the UK as well.

I do not know if all of the side glass in Aussie Vans were after-market installations or some were factory.  I know I have seen many pictures of the Aussie Vans (both round-nose and square-nose) with the fuller sized windows in place.

I know I prefer the fuller length windows over the small portal window.

Well, with that Oz van I posted, it should be pretty easy to fit larger rear side windows to it.  Just cut a bigger window opening in the sheetmetal, use some Mini windshield rubber, (or some universal glass rubber) and get a 2 pieces of flat automotive glass cut.   Bingo! And you have yourself a Mini wagon (sort of).  Or, go for a full Van to woody conversion and end up looking like this one that was on BaT recently.

Or buy the fiberglass or weld in panels and make it back into a van, actually you could just weld in some circular panels as they did not cut the inset lines. When selling an Estate attracts a bigger audience and is much easier to move on though.

Even the saloons used Clubman fronts  from the early 70's the round nose was no longer sold.

It's a shame those $1500 doors have the burst proof locks as they are not a direct swap for sliders, if they were and you had a van or pick up project this van would be worth buying to steal the doors from especially at the low asking price.

Things are definitely different in the UK.  Faced with a constant supply of brand new Minis coming out of one end of Longbridge, the British public junked nearly all of the millions of Mk. I cars on their roads.  Now when a Mk. I Mini is found in the UK, people expect crazy money for them, no matter the condition.

Case in point, this plain Jane Mini 850 that just might have some rust issues.   ::)    It has a Buy it Now price of US$7,500.   Yeah, right.

I don't think it will pass a MOT without front indicators...

Reminds me of the Mopar craze here in the states a decade ago.  Saw stripped, rusted out shells with no drive train.  Literally just a vin that said it came from the factory with a Hemi going for 20-30K.  Now at the time hole cars were fetching multi million dollars so guess if you had the time and the want to track down every single piece it may have been worth it.

So that is what happened to the car on the Titanic LOL.
A very late Mk I one of the last i would presume but since the UK goes by date first registered who knows it could have sat for a year in the showroom or back lot looking at the condition of it.
I noticed he was asking USD and the seller is Mountain Minis. He has shipped a few Minis over here and they all looked tarted up with fresh paint to me. One that he sent was a shorty and it was held at customs in Ca and sent back, i heard the buyer got his money back with some help from Bill Cox at Monte Carlo Minis.

It is pretty clear that there are many more Mk. I & Mk. II Minis in the US than remain in the UK, so the idea of idea of trying to sell a completely rusted hulk to someone here the US is crazy.   If anything, it would make more sense going the other way.

It is pretty clear that there are many more Mk. I & Mk. II Minis in the US than remain in the UK, so the idea of idea of trying to sell a completely rusted hulk to someone here the US is crazy.   If anything, it would make more sense going the other way.

I agree but maybe he has already tried it in the UK and had no luck selling it although i look at ebay a lot over there and have never seen this one for sale.

This tasty little morsel popped up on BaT today.....it belongs to Russ Foust - the fellow with the wild clubby with the Acura V-6 in it - which he is in the process of changing to a turbo and expects 400 hp - but I digress......

Several things are appealing about this car to me - it belonged to a local who is very meticulous about his cars. The engine has already been done. It has the Datsun 5 speed conversion already done. It's basically a Bugeye with box fenders.

Several things are not appealing - it's a chore to get in and out of these, but once in they're fairly comfortable. It has a 1098 motor instead of a 1275, but of course I can fix that.

I may go see it just to make sure it is what I think it is.....could be fun to have a little top down roadster to buzz around town in.

That little Sprite of Russ's sold for $8100!

Today there's another Prather Racing car on BaT, a 72 MGB that the owner spent $44K on in body, paint, interior and mechanical work - $22k went to Prather racing for engine, trans rebuilds and the addition of the supercharger.

Wonder what this one will bring? Yet another car that for all intents and purposes is brand new - and improved.

Looking for my first mini project car. It is extremely difficult to get one here in California. Would love any input about getting this as a first time mini owner

Are you capable of doing your own work? Do you already have the skills, a shop, the tools etc? Cause if not you need to buy a car that's already "done" and registered in Ca. or buy a pre-1975 car.

Give us some more info about what you want to do, budget etc....

Even though that one is already titled in California, expect it to have to try to pass smog testing if/when running again.  Being a 1980, it is newer than the no-smog cutoff year of 1975.

As others have asked: What is your budget?  What are your skills?  What are you goals for getting a Mini?

Check with Michael Lewis at MiniGuy (www.miniguy.com (http://www.miniguy.com)) as he usually has a good line on what are available in California - project cars through nicely restored runners.  I know he has a decent yellow 1961 listed - it used to be one I owned.

Thanks to everyone for the input, lots of support on this forum. my budget would be 5-7k for a project car. I am mechanically inclined and have restored engines in the past. I have zero experience in body work and which is the most intimidating part of the mini (rusty nation). That is why as much as possible I would like to find one with a straight body and as rust free as possible ( i know this is rare). The appeal of the one on ebay i posted is the sale price is $2500 which i could probably get repaneled/repaired with the savings in my budget and restore the engine myself.  However, looks like the car has not been registered since 1987 and will probably have a lot of fees to register. And also as you mentioned will have future smog issues.

Thank you for the link the miniguy. I went through all the listing and narrowed some down and will probably go this route to find my project car.

My favorite Ferrari. I remember as a kid watching a tv series with i think Tony Curtis in one (can't remember the name of the show) and just thought that was the mutts nuts back then.
It is amazing the amount of respect and rise in prices the Dino has achieved over the last few years, for a while there they were like the red headed step child at a family reunion.

EDIT: The show was called the Persuaders and co starred Roger Moore in an Aston Martin DBS.

Wow, BaT has been interesting lately.....currently there is a third in a row Dino GT for sale, but this one has raised some eyebrows.....it appears it might be a revin. Much like the ReVin Minis we all know and love (I have one) people are easily able to spot the differences. The sellers have stayed out of it completely, but the few comments they have made are of the "oh well, maybe this isn't the car for you" brand......

Over on F-Chat the debate is raging, with the supposed real expert chiming in as little as possible but confirming the engine and trans came from two other cars - certainly not this one.....concerns are the same as for the MIni, maybe it was revinned to get it around the 25 year rule, maybe it's stolen etc....but the $$$$ numbers are much higher of course. Even in spite of all the doubt, the car has been bid up to $106,000 - making me think there are a couple of shills involved.

As the Dino turns.....

I'm going to have to check out the Dino auction.

There's a JDM Mini for sale on CL for $5900.  The car is in the US now, but the photo is from a Japanese car auction, and the clearcoat is blown.   Not to mention dual horns are hanging from the front license bracket.  It's a 1000cc but with a/c.

Note the fake Mk I / Mk. II style door hinges - very much a Japanese retro Mini thing.

If the car is otherwise halfway decent, that may be a good price.

By the width of those arches i would say the owner took his wide wheels off for the sale.
Has the MK I treatment done to it which is popular in Japan.
The wheels that it has on it are 35th Anniversary wheels.
Actually a decent price and with some work could be a nice Mini.

Not too much if they're small enough carbs, look at 750 Honda bikes with 4 carbs....those are probably 1 1/4 carbs.

Wannabe racecar?

Not a fan of those deep bucket seats and the climb over front roll bar cage or the way the front arches have been cut out and had the wide flares installed.

I really don't get the Moke thing - I mean if I lived in the Islands or someplace where it's always warm and you can't drive far or fast, then it might make sense to me.....but here - where it gets cold and it's a long way to anywhere? Just doesn't make much sense to me.....

Dont knock it till ya try it....
Drove mine today =  72 here in Charlotte.   Winter is coming this weekend however...

Yes its a 2-3 Season car.. Unless you do want to freeze in that winter , but theres nothing else like it with 4 wheels ( mabye a manx buggy or such)   and its a Mini Experience. I argue handles BETTER than a mini.  that is Lighter and has a Lower Center of gravity.
YES the interstate is NO thanks... but thats fine.

Gets WAY more attention in public, with the  "is that legal / Can you drive that questions"
Easily hauls more than a sedan ( toss your stuff in and go).

Cole used mine for CMU and blasted around with all of us in the 'FAST group"  no worries = he got used to not hearing car noises , but hearing ' wind and outside noises, smelling smells outside of the window up sedans.  Nature driving.

only tough people drive multiple hours in a Moke, Ive done it once,.  4 hrs once to CMU + Event  + home.

its been said before and I agree =  at this point if i HAD To get rid of all my mini's except one =  The Moke would stay.

We are fortunate and have the Moke weather here in Florida for Moking. We drove to a CMU event towing a camper trailer i think Erwin Tn and left early on the Sunday morning to go Moken around Florida with the temp at 36 degrees in Erwin as long as you are wrapped up it is fine even the wifey handled it, total miles over 10 days was 2800 elevation was sea level to 6200 feet only problem on the whole trip was a new fuel filter clog.
I am actually more comfortable in the Moke than any of the other Mini's and yes the Moke would be the last Mini to go if i had to sell them off.

I may just have to consider that green Moke.

I kind of regret having sold my white one, but the opportunity for the Mini Marcos and the offer for my white one were to good to pass up.

Unfortunately, I have learned from the Mini Marcos that the classic "arms extended" sports car driving position does not work well for me - bad shoulders.

You gonna put a little more motor in it? I'd be happy to build you something fun.... 77.gif

What will you ask for the Marcos?

The Marcos would not be cheap - probably would list north of $27K.

The contacts that I found it through may still have leads to folks with "deep pockets" that I snatched if out from under back in May.  I'm waiting to hear what they say.

I already have a regular Mini obtained, but may still consider the green Moke.

Cool, then you'll have a "regular" car for those times when the weather isn't too co-operative and the Moke for when it is! 77.gif

I guess that would be easier than listing it on BaT, but I wonder where you might get the most return on your investment?

Too much money, or another re-shell waiting to happen? Or both?
Title: Re: Cars for Sale on CL or Ebay - or BaT
Post by: MPlayle on November 11, 2019, 01:56:38 PM
A mix.  The more I studied it, the less comfortable about the price - seemed too much.  I don't think it is another re-shell waiting to happen (at least not like my white one turned out to be).

It does show indications of work in the past, but much better work than was done to my white one.  There were several places that should have well defined seams, but appeared to have been smoothed.  It had several things that were later model replacement items inconsistent with being a 1964 Moke.

It also had dark carpeting installed on the sides of the pontoons in the seating area.  That technique was used on my white Moke to hide some messy welds where the pontoons had been rebuilt.

When I got a couple videos (startup and walk-around), it revealed the shifter to be more like the later Aussie Mokes - a cross between magic-wand and rod-change.  That coupled with an apparent 998 engine indicated at least an "upgrade" at some point in its history.  The VIN also did not seem correct for a Moke.

Seems very reasonable. As someone commented they are bringing these back from Japan to the UK and selling for more than this.

I will admit, I am using MiniGuy to manage the sale of the Mini Marcos.  He posted a craigslist listing (linked back to his site for the full details) that got picked up as the back reference for the Barn Finds posting.

I like that Barn Finds appears to have done some of their own background research before making their post along with their post being an independent write-up (not some cut&paste job).  I am hoping the additional exposure generates some serious interest in the car.

Not a Mini, but a MINI on BaT.

This is the limited edition Goodwood model with the full Rolls-Royce interior, only 140 sold in the US. The best leather, lambswool carpet, the interior was done by Rolls.   So sort of like a classic Mini done by Radford.

And the MSRP was an eye-watering $52K (!) when new.  :-\

Offered at No Reserve, somebody is being brave.  What do you think it will bring?   Perhaps $20K?  Less?

The 997 Cooper was introduced in September 1961.   It was basically a Super De Luxe trim model (chrome trim and nicer interior) with the twin carb 997cc long stroke engine, and brand new disc brakes.   In the early promo  materials it was known as as the Austin Seven Cooper.    Mini was not part of the car's name at that time.

This Hornet is on a UK online auction site sort of like BaT, but without any facility for viewers to comment.  The car descriptions are much more detailed and knowledgeable than what BaT writes (and a bit more bombastic too - but that might just be Brits being Brits).  The don't charge any buyer's fees - that's nice.

They estimate this Mini might bring £17K, about US$22K.  Hmmmm.

This Fiesta Yellow Mini 850 is on the same site, but it's being offered for sale, not at auction.

Perhaps just a bit pricey from a US perspective at £25K = US$31,500.   :-\   A lot of money for a non-Cooper.   But early Minis are so rare and nostalgic in the UK, somebody might pay that much.   The Cooper wheels look out of place on an 850.

Good memory Dave! Yes, I was very interested in those back about 10 or 12 years ago. Way before the launch of the ugly-as-sin Transformers-inspired robot/insect styling of the Polaris Slingshot.   On a trip to England I visited the cottage industry factory where Grinnalls were built.  I met the owner, Mark Grinnall, and got to drive one.  It was a blast, much like driving a Lotus 7 would be I imagine.  I also got to ride as Mark drove a Scorpion and that was the single most terrifying/exciting/fun/scary ride I've ever had in my life.   He knew the capabilities of the Scorpion and he really exploited them.   I could never find one in my price range and gave up looking.

A running Mk. I Mini said to be a Cooper.   A '62, so not a Cooper S.  If it's really a Cooper it started with a 997,  and now appears to have a 1275.

Not inexpensive at $22K.

One thing for sure, if a Mini has 10" wheels it is very likely pre-1985 because few people go to the effort to convert from 12" or 13" to 10" wheels.  So this might actually be a '73.

I worked on this Mini a few years ago for the previous owner did a head gasket and some other work.
The car was restored for him in the UK to a very high standard.
He sold it and it has been for sale in South Florida for 2 to 3 years for I believe an unrealistic $15,900.

This car popped up on Craigslist today - it was my first new MINI, a 2003 JCW with lots of custom hardware and touches. I bought it from the original owner - he bought it new at Baron and between the JCW kit and aero package, body colored, and all the interior trim they said he spent $40K - in 2003! He traded it back in to Baron in 2006 and I bought it from them.....I sold it in 2009 when I ordered my Clubby and it went to Des Moines. He traded it it on a new JCW the next year and it has been kicking around Des Moines ever since....

It's been for sale for at least 6 years.  I remember seeing it in early 2014 when I was looking for a new Mini.  Looks very sharp, but let down IMO by being overpriced and a deal-breaker automatic.

Actually had a chance to buy it a couple years back.  Someone on the metroplex forum had posted the listing asking questions. Since it was a dealership it had a free view of car fax so I verified it was mine.  However it appeared to have had a rough life after my ownership and really didn't need another car.

I was half tempted but I know it would need thousands spent on it, I'm sure it needs a clutch by now and the "while you have it outs" would add up. Plus they blacked out all the chrome (hopefully with plasti dip) and the driver's seat looks pretty rough.

Who knows, it may pop up again when I'm better suited to working on it .....

Yeah weird.  Like the upright oil filter sitting on the block which is characteristic of South African engines.

That's great, but can you reset the computer after?   All the euro models we looked at in 2019 could only be maintained by the dealer.  Mainly due to the fact that they were the only ones with the software to reset the maintenance computer.

Some Japanese brands make it super easy.  On my both wife's previous Infiniti and on her new Mazda, resetting the maintenance reminder is just a simple option on the car's main screen.  Very owner friendly.

The Mazda even offers a choice of either a standard time/distance setting (e.g. 1 year or 7500 miles or similar) or a variable reminder based upon an actual use algorithm (e.g. analysis of many short trips vs highway miles, etc).  I changed the Mazda's oil at 1,600 miles - I wasn't comfortable leaving the initial oil in for a full 4,000 miles. Didn't want the inevitable fine metal particles of a brand new engine hanging around after a break-in period.

On my '02 MINI resetting the oil monitor involves a whole game of getting to hidden menus accessed by pushing the odometer reset button and having the key in the right position and waiting so many seconds and pushing something else.  It's a minor PITA.  And all that does is default to a 15,000 mile oil (variable) life countdown which I am smart enough to never follow.  Instead I just keep track of oil change date and mileage myself on a spreadsheet and I don't rely on the car to tell me.

The 2002 and 2008 MINIs I had would let you do resets, but not the 2016 MINI Clubman.  The 2016 did not even have a dip-stick.  You had to check the oil level and life through the on-board computer only.

The Germans have a whole different way of thinking about oil changes and vehicle maintenance that just does not translate to the American way of thinking.  And I'm talking about the German public, not just the snooty German engineers who seem to assume car owners should trust them implicitly regarding the total dealership control of car care.

Personally, I regard dealerships as just about the last place you would want caring for your car.  The only reason to use them is for warranty work, or something that requires a completely unique tool that only dealerships have.  Anything else is asking to be ripped off.

Here's a little explanation of the cultural differences between Germans and Americans and oil changes.

When you've run out of interesting things to say about the car being auctioned...

A current BaT auction of an early MGB says this:

Quote...The 1.8-liter inline-four sends power to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. The seller notes that the fuses were cleaned in preparation for the sale...

Dunno.  But when I got my first Mini in 1974, a 1962 Austin Mini, one of the first things I did was to buy amber rear turnsignal lenses and fit them to my car.  Wanted it to look more  "authentic".  Other Mini owners I knew did that too.  As did some owners of VW Beetles back then too.  When I had a '65 Mini Traveller back in the 90s I also changed out the red lenses.

Personally, I still hate red turnsignal lenses on any car to this day. They just look cheap. Like the manufacturer doesn't care about safety.

Nice Mini.  My '62 was a Mini Deluxe so it resembled a Cooper with the extra chrome, over riders, and additional instruments and so on. But it wasn't a Cooper S like yours. Mine had an AA 1275 and Cooper S discs so it was a pretend Cooper S.

I worry about the condition of a car when the seller can't be bothered to proofread the text they wrote praising it.

"This is a one owner car fully restored immaculate condishen inside and outside 850 engine 4 speep gear box all original full history must be seen to apresated this is a very rere car"

So, lazy. Or dumb.  That makes it difficult to believe they spent much time caring for the car or getting the little things right.

It seems wagons don't do well in the US market, it will be interest to see if this sells:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/531197090271643?view=permalink&id=3472598206131502

Located in the U.K., about $22K

As it is from Facebook Marketplace, I am not sure how you follow it

I worry about the condition of a car when the seller can't be bothered to proofread the text they wrote praising it.

"This is a one owner car fully restored immaculate condishen inside and outside 850 engine 4 speep gear box all original full history must be seen to apresated this is a very rere car"

So, lazy. Or dumb.  That makes it difficult to believe they spent much time caring for the car or getting the little things right.

I read that and thought the same thing but reading the comments he has rheumatoid arthritis so I was thinking he may be older and have some other issues possibly.
Nice Wagon though.

As someone with RA I can relate. It can be very debilitating unless successfully treated. It doesn't prevent proofreading but may affect motivation.

Spelling errors irritate me too, but just because someone can't spell, doesn't mean they can't turn a wrench. I used to work with a guy who was educated enough to become a Chief Master Sergeant in the Air Force, but couldn't tell the difference between its and it's, and didn't no when he used the write word for something that sounded the same. I had to proofread everything he wrote. But he wasn't dumb or lazy.

Obviously not a Cooper but it is a rare Innocenti still not worth the $25k asking price though.

Too bad about the sound quality of the videos.....you could try a couple of pieces of duct tape over the mic openings - might help. that's what I do on my videos now - doesn't stop it completely but def helps!

I started experimenting with the case arrangements that came with the camera.  The driving videos in the Mini Marcos were without any case.  The ones for the Burton were with the case on, but the slotted case back installed.  There is also a solid case back I need to try next.

It's a GoPro?

I never had good luck with those even tho they claim to have software to get rid of wind noise. Some tape over the mic holes will help a lot. It's just better when you can hear the engine and such.....

I am pleased with the results.  Just need to work out the payment details with the winner.

I had a little anxiety over it starting a bit slow and being quiet over the weekend, but it passed the reserve, so I'm happy.

As Dave says, next up will be the Mini Marcos and scrutiny by the Mini crowd on BaT.  That should be in another 2 or 3 weeks.

I think one of the best sales tool is a good set of driving videos, that allow you to hear the sound of the engine and exhaust......without a ton of wind noise.

There was a great one on a red TR3, showed the guy walking out to the car and getting in - cut to view over his shoulder as he started it up and drove off. Cut to some nice twisty bits viewpoint both from in the car and roadside as he went by, then cut to him pulling up and getting out of the car again. Made it seem as if you were going in the car with him....you felt like you were there!

Those kind of videos usually require an assistant and/or a remote enough location (especially for the roadside drive-by shots.  An assistant is something I lack.

I need to try for some better in-car driving videos for the Mini Marcos as those were without the weather case on the camera and have lots of wind noise.

I went in with a realistic expectation, so I am quite happy with the result.

For the "odd ball" cars like the Burton, it seems to be a matter of finding the right niche market of those that might actually want one.  BaT seems one of the more likely venues for finding such people.  Most of those commenting on it were already Citroen folks.  Apparently, fewer of the "esoteric" car folks noticed it.  As a result, it did not get as much activity to drive the price higher.

On to seeing how the Mini Marcos does.

Don keeps goading me to buy an MG Midget - I need another car like a hole in the head - but I look at them from time to time just to see what the market is doing. Most of them are pretty tired and rough and I'm not in any mood to start yet another project. Under the theory of market research I've been watching them on BaT as well as the local Craigs and FB Market place.
On BaT they get the usual BaT-bump, cars that normally would sell for $4-5K seem to go for $7-8K, but THIS one defies all logic!

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1979-mg-midget-18/ (https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1979-mg-midget-18/)

These two guys must have gotten into dick measuring contest!

I have been wanting to buy a pickup truck - to maybe replace my Blue MINI Clubman - as a truck would be far more useful to me now - but I simply don't want a big honking truck, and even the new Ranger and Frontier seem huge to me. What I'd really like is something like we used to be able to buy back in the late 70's /early 80's.  I even considered doing something like Bruce did with his Japanese Toyota import truck.

Two possibilities have appeared tho - this first one I've known about for a while and thought about doing - where you buy a Jetta, Passat or the like and put one of these $3K kits on it - but this is the first I've seen done on an A4 and I like it! There are still some issues with this car but I like the concept....

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2004-audi-a4-9/ (https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2004-audi-a4-9/)

Another option comes courtesy of Dan's recent adventures Importing his VW Van again. After poking around on that website I found this....

I had never heard of Saveiro - in earlier versions it has a Beetle aircooled motor driving the front wheels!  In this version it has what looks like a Passat/Fox style front drive setup. I really like this! It's the right size, modern enough, manual transmission is probably a good idea.....sort of a modern version of the Caddy I used to have.

That Midget auction price is CRAZY!

I watched a video a couple of years ago about a Jetta to pickup conversion. Looks like a fun task.  And you end up with something  unique and useful.

That Saveiro is interesting. Definitely looks like the Fox sedan/wagon we got here 30 years ago (which came from Brazil).  Those were good, simple cars - my oldest daughter's first car was a red Fox 2-door.   With a longitudinal engine and front wheel drive it basically was like a little Audi in layout.

Dave, if you don't want to get one like the one I got, there are conventional (non-cabover) Japanese pickups available for import.

Here's an example:  https://sp.beforward.jp/toyota/hilux/bh500076/id/2029229/

This Toyota pickup only has 40,000 km (just over 20,000 miles!), and is under $8K delivered to the US port.

Probably. It seems Japan uses smaller engines, probably reflecting different uses in that country vs the US.

My truck has a 1.8.  It is adequate but certainly no power monster.  And if you think back to how our vehicles were powered back in the 80s and 90s that was pretty much the norm. I added a tach last week and found that the engine is turning just under 3K at around 65mph, so there is some in reserve.

The advantage to the Toyota Hilux is those things are damn near indestructible. Basically the same thing as the 80's/early 90's models of Toyota trucks you still see occasionally on the road here that are rusted nearly to dust but still running strong. Guessing the Japanese versions of the Nissan are probably similar.

Yeah, here in Texas where rust is not an issue, the old Toyota trucks just keep going forever.  Just like Top Gear noted.

This one has 180K miles and is $4K.  The outside is faded, but the interior looks great.

180k....230k.....practically brand new for one of those trucks. I know a few around here with 400+ that run well enough I'd drive them just about anywhere. Not much to look at since a lot of the body work is gone thanks to rust but mechanically sound none the less.

Dave,

That 1991 VW Saveiro only has a 2000 pound towing capacity with trailer brakes, 1320 pounds without trailer brakes.  It would be at the limit for flat towing your green Mini behind it.

Otherwise, it is a neat little thing.  The one interior picture showing the dash does tend to indicate it may have a heater, but definitely no a/c.

I am sure the passing of Sir Sean Connery/James Bond 007 helped the sale.

I saw that on Facebook Marketplace this morning - a couple things against it - 1975, and it's a 998.

Edit: Ad says 998 but I think it's actually a 1275. Also, would a 75 still have a genset? Def a South African car, based on the location of the oil filter. I think this car would need a LOT of work to make it like I would want it. I have enough projects!

Buzz was a good buy when I got him, even tho I had to redo the brakes, engine, seats, instruments and suspension.

Oh, maybe he wasn't...... ::) ;D

Looks like he was the ship ahead of me on 9/18/20.  Maybe he bought it to flip since prices are considerably less from Brazil or isn't the mechanical type to go through and fix all the tiny gremlins it's sure to have.  Noticed in the comments one of the bus snobs already knocking it's from Brazil.  Even though they used German tooling and had German VW workers to assure quality.

Edit:  I was ahead of him on the ship. 9/1/20 entry date.

I saw this 1990 Mini in Japan for sale and noticed that it has internal hinged doors with roll up windows AND they have vent windows.    Do those look like  Innocenti doors?  Or something custom Japanese aftermarket?

That looks like a really nice car.....twin carbs on a small block motor  - add in the vent windows doors, interesting dash and great seats and only $7200 plus shipping and port costs, maybe $10K delivered? Seems like a decent buy at that price.

Edit: I put in US and Baltimore for the port and it came up with $8345.....pretty good deal it seems to me.

Yeah, Ro-Ro shipping costs are based upon how many cubic meters the vehicle takes up.  Therefore Ro-Ro ocean shipping on Minis is dirt cheap (relatively speaking that is, considering it's actually going halfway around the world).    For big vehicles it can get quite expensive.

Edit: Yup, even with import fees and using a customs broker it looks like you could get that car in the US for under $9K.

It estimated the same price to Galveston, which is about 400 miles closer to me than Baltimore.....and curiously about $100 more to go to Long Beach, which is a LOT closer to Japan!
Title: Re: Cars for Sale on CL or Ebay - or BaT

I think some of those differing transportation costs costs might involve other things. For example how quickly can they get in and out of port (wait times outside the port), what fees have to be paid, and so on.   You can imagine that California, with its love of extra rules and regulations and fees, might actually cost a shipper more than taking the car transporter through the Panama Canal to get to the southern and eastern US ports.

You can save another $50 by going into Freeport, Texas instead of Galveston.

You also don't need a TWIC card escort for RO-RO into Freeport, but you supposedly do for Galveston now.

Edit: The Burton came into Freeport and I did not need an escort to pick it up myself.  I did use a customs broker for the paperwork, then took that to the facility at Freeport and picked the car up.  The process at the port was smooth and easy even with Covid precautions.

Well, as much as I might like to have that car - and I do like it, not only does it have all the stuff I like but it even has A/C!  - I have WAY too many cars and projects as it is. No where to park it either.

There's a LHD Innocenti 1300 Export on that site too, in just OK condition (it also has A/C!) for the eye watering price of $23K plus shipping - for the condition it's in I think that's pretty excessive. One could buy the one Dan and I are finishing up for not a whole lot more than that with all new practically everything.

I read that Freeport was actively trying to be the up-and-coming port on the Texas coast and is working to take business away from  Galveston.  Cheaper fees and less regulations help in that effort.

I don't think they're Australian. Because the internal hinged doors from Australia that I've seen have a flat exterior door handle. Sort of a rectangle with a slot in it to lift up.

I've said for a while now that I thought the prices on BaT had gone absolutely nutso lately, what with a Saleen S7 selling for $1.2 mill, a 356 convertible D going for $250K and a 95 Rolls Corniche selling for $175K.....somebody on Jalopniks made the pithy comment that it's probably become a good place to *ahem* do the laundry......I've thought that for a while when watching the same 5 guys buy muscle cars on Mecum for ever increasing amounts - tho at the time I thought they were just running their own little version of musical chairs or at worst a little Ponzi scheme.

Today's sale marks an interesting turning point, when a K5 Blazer sells for $115,000! Even if it does have a nice LS1 motor in it and new paint and interior....I mean....come on!

The run up in Mini prices could be written off to being "discovered" again as a fun car, or even by virtue of being hot in England where they have rusted into bits by now......

Where's it going to end?

I figured it had "jumped the shark" when an Integra type R went for 85k. It's rare-ish but in the end it's just a Honda.  Kinda like the mopar craze when the hemi cudas were multi million dollar cars.  It's just a Steele boat with a big motor that a modern daily driver could outrun.  Car prices and the wealthy idiots that drive them is the least logical thing in the world.  A long with cars as investments in general.  You want to speculate but stock or a painting. Cars are for driving.

Things were a lot more simple back then. Those pedals look like someone went out to the scrap pile and scavenged whatever they could find to fabricate them. The clutch looks like a small piece of angle, the brake a piece of flat bar (could also be a small angle but it's hard to tell at the angle of the pic) and the accelerator a piece of round stock.
Title: Re: Cars for Sale on CL or Ebay - or BaT

It's odd that the clutch pedal arm looks stronger than the brake arm.....

Post by: cstudep on December 01, 2020, 08:39:03 PM
Both the clutch arm and the accelerator look a bit more substantial (although round stock isn't all that rigid really). Perhaps they were just optimistic and created this car for going and not for stopping.  ;D

Hey, somebody else in Oklahoma imported a Type 2 bus from Brazil a couple of months ago.  Could've arrived on the same boat.

15.5k reserve not met.  I was looking through similar buses from where I imported mine and guessed he bought it between 14-18k as bare bones as it was with the underside being kind of dirty.  A split window 23 conversion from Brazil a couple months ago went for 53k on bat.  It was all done up though.

Still has the cheap ass Nissan Micra interior too.....

Did you see Richard Brunning picked up a Supercharged Jag XKF sedan today? Brilliant car he says - but the only thing he was after was the drivetrain, for the MGZ project I'll bet. IF they can make the engine run properly with a stand alone ECU. IF.

I didn't see that. Glad to hear Richard Brunning has time for a new project now that he's spent 8 years to finally finish Project Binky with the Mini and also Project Escargot with the transporter.

Wait. What?  What's that?  Neither one of those two is actually finished and the boys are onto something else?  Oh dear.

Well, they're moving ahead on both, but Binky is in the hands of the paint shop and the interior trimmers....so there's pretty much nothing left they can do till it's done.

They've taken styling inspiration from old Chevy Blazers to create a replacement front end for brand new Toyota RAV4 SUVs.  Here's the Buddy model.

This video for a BaT auction really raises the bar for a driving video of the car being sold.  I guess this is what Dave refers to as selling the sizzle rather than the steak.  ;D

It's an old JDM firetruck.

Title: Re: Cars for Sale on CL or Ebay - or BaT
Post by: MiniDave on December 14, 2020, 04:06:57 PM
Yep, the video emphasizes what you do with the truck, not what it is exactly.....really professionally done video too.  With the bongos going in the background no less......

My point about videos is that having someone riding in the front seat alternatively showing the floor and the roof as the car accelerates and shifts and with so much wind noise you not only can't stand to have the sound on but you also can't hear the engine - that is not a good sales video. You want to put the prospective driver in the seat as if they owned they car, and show them how cool or how much fun it is to own. Show other people's reaction to the car, giving you thumbs up and admiring looks.

When I sold cars if I had a customer who was waffling, I'd ask them questions like - does this fit in your garage? do you pull in forwards or back in? What's the first trip you'll take in your new Porsche? What will your brother, dad, uncle or whomever they've mentioned think about your new car? You have to put them in the drivers seat -at least in their mind.

In this video, he's showing not only how the car starts and drives, but what you can do with it..... very well done.

I took a roadtrip Sat past to look at what was advertised as a 1959 Mini minor. Outside pics showed existence of a drip rail so was skeptical since they were built later with drip rails but was curious enough to take a look. I arrived a a place that looked like a wreckyard. The owner told me he had spent a lot of time cleaning out his deceased father's estate in Mesquite TX and moving it all to his house a few miles away.
Car in question was RHD missing engine with no title (lost it seems). He said it was built in Pakistan and somehow ended up in his fathers posession and lounged for 40 years. He said he had to dig it
out of leaves halfway up the side so it wasn't in  the best of shape.
Rust was apparent and appeared to need a new floor or parts. Boot was pretty bad. I've seen the extreme rusty restorations and would never attempt one myself but there may be someone out there
that wants a project, Let me know for more info if interested. Oh yeah he was asking $3500. Way too high but I wasn't interested so did not discuss.
Also had another baskiet case 60 Morris Mini LHD but worse shape he would let go for $3000. Huge hole where spare tire was rusted. need whole floor and then some I suppose.

Two stored in the weather. Blue one got a little shade. A fourth is piled on a trailer wrecked when his dad was in high school. May be of some interest to MG TD fans.

These Mini people in the UK are out of their freaking minds.

This disintegrating pile of crusty iron oxide goes for truly crazy money in this video:  £18,000 !!!  Roughly $24,000.

Apparently they don't realize you can get a fully running restored genuine Cooper S in the US for not a whole lot more money.

You got to look at the video see how bad this car is.

Normally this car, with nearly 100K miles,  would be perhaps a £9000 car on a really good day.  But the auction house claims they are expecting £22K to £25K (!)

Seems kind of a crazy move to try and price 1990s Mini Coopers like early ones.

38 Porsches currently on there for sale this week, - if that's their average, it's over 1900 a year - I can't imagine any franchise Porsche dealer selling that many new and used P cars a year - not even in Miami or LA!

A red Honda Beat sold yesteray on BaT - for the third time.

First time 12/18/18 sold for $4500

2nd time on  8/25/20 sold for $7500

3rd time on12/10/21 sold for $12,311

That's pretty decent appreciation! I thought cars were depreciating assets? Wonder what it will do the next time?

As a Beat owner I was watching that one!  On the plus side, the owner paid for a paint correction and a car was very shiny and presented well, on the negative side it's been 10 years since a timing belt change and that's generally valued at least $1000 cost.

So. Wow.

It easily costs that much because the Beat is like a Porsche Boxster where you can't really even see the engine, and the engine has  to be dropped down to access the timing belt and water pump and so forth.  When I was sourcing a Beat from Japan that's the Japanese price I was quoted for having the work done in Japan before it was exported and of course they would be familiar with doing that job on a Beat. Nobody in the US is going to be familiar with it so the cost is likely higher.

Supposed to be one of two that were used in the program, this one has verifiable history and is completely refurbished and original. Um.......if it's completely refurbished, how can it be original?  8.gif

My friend Clancy just got home from hauling some cars around the states, and one of his stops was at The Bugeye Guy's shop.....(https://www.bugeyeguy.com/) .....he has a shop full of Bugeyes in all conditions from junk to show cars and the cheap ones go for $30K or more......

He thinks the prices on these and many other LBC's (including Minis) are just going to keep going up. He notes the recent increases that rubber bumper MGB's and Midgets are bringing.....

I went and looked at a late model Midget locally that was supposed to be in great condition, runs great etc....it was a mess. Suspension blown, repainted from Pageant blue to resale red - poorly. The engine had a pretty good knock in it, transmission was noisy.....he wanted $7500 for it. If it doesn't sell, he thinks he'll drive it to Florida and sell it there. Says he adds a quart of oil each month. I'm thinking if he does try to drive it to Fla, it'll be for sale somewhere in Missouri with a blown engine.

Edit: He just texted to say thanks for pointing out the bad rear shocks,, said he looked under the car and someone had removed the original lever shocks and installed tube shocks but didn't bolt the lower parts to the suspension. He's leaving for Florida in it next week, he says.

First let me say this, I upchucked in my mouth a little with the all posts about the late 70's Spitfires.  If you want a happy life AVOID ALL SPITTYS, bought one brand new in 1978 and after it spent 7 of the first 11 months of ownership in the dealer's shop I never ever bought British car again, that is until I came across this little 1990 MKV Mayfair LHD.  Built for the French market it went to Italy and Germany before being brought to San Antonio.

I managed to snipe the car and even though it had sat for 3 years, after draining the fuel tank, changing out the battery and tires, my daughter and I drove it almost a 1,000 miles home.

Actually I don't really know anyone here.  I saw a link on Facebook to a page in Oklahoma what had a link to this site.  I'm in MOTR, Minis of the Rockies used to run a board like this and saw the Spitfire comments I had to say something.

This is actually my second classic, the last being over 40 years ago.  I do have 3 MINI Coopers as well, and R50, R57 and R60 and was most active in antique motorcycling, the AMCA for decades.

I bought Buzz sight unseen in Baltimore and drove it 1100 miles back to KC.

Peter Kyte bought his Moke and would have driven it back to Denver from Houston if he hadn't gotten blasted by rain and storms.

Bruce bought a Beat and drove it from the coast to San Antonio, not as far but just about as crazy!

So yes, plenty of mixed nuts here when it comes to Minis!   77.gif

Welcome to the madhouse, you'll fit in just fine!

My longest single drive in an unknown car was a Metro sight unseen bought in Quebec and drove it 1800 miles back to Florida.
On the way home stopped at the Mini Meet East show in Maryland and bought a second Metro and my friend Mike drove that back to Florida with me.
The first Metro ran fine but the second one broke down 14 times in 180 miles, I diagnosed it to have something in the fuel tank blocking the feed so I picked up a 5 gallon gas can, 10' of fuel line and an electric fuel pump.
We drove back with with 5 gallon fill ups but made it.
Fun times ;)

Peter's a character.   Earlier this year he taught my daughter to drive manual on the Moke he drove from Galveston.  That's what enabled she and I to drive this car back, although she was concerned that shifting with her right hand rather than the left was going to be a daunting task.

Oh and he recently added a Barbie, a white and pink Moke, to his collection.

It is a 1300 Alfa like those that used to race in SCCA C Sedan against Minis.

Not sure about LHD drive ERAs. Some did go to Germany that could have been LHD.
I would prefer a UK version compared to the JDM versions which are coming home to the UK, no AC.

Classic Minis don't show up on Cars & Bids very often, but this 1990 JDM one has already been bid to $15,500 in just the first day of the auction!  The audience seems slightly different over there – the site is focused on more modern cars – and this is more of a novelty there than on Bring a Trailer.  So some exposure to people who are not used to seeing Mimis.  How high can it go?

This car just sold for $21,330 which is an exceptional price for a regular old Mini with a 1275.   The audience over there seems to have money and yet, based on comments, are perplexed by things we take for granted such as shifting with your left hand or a stalk-mounted horn push.

Wonder if they noticed the little hand cranks on the doors used to make the window glass move up and down?  ;D

https://www.instagram.com/p/Ceyy3rXDbQR/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= (https://www.instagram.com/p/Ceyy3rXDbQR/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=)

He is asking for 50-55K GBP, which converts to 60-66K USD.  Unless he puts it on an auction site, we probably won't know what it will sell for.

I knew Alex before I move to the US, and his eye for detail is outstanding.

Try about 1/20 the asking price as that one is good for only the title & VIN - needs a complete new shell, has no subframes, no interior bits of any kind, no electrical, no tank, etc. - too much missing to list.

I watched the youTube linked in the facebook post and it is basically the rotten shell, the old bumpers, a very questionable steering rack, and possibly a defunct 850 engine good as a boat anchor.

I sold a Moke body like that for $200 back in the 90s.  I know we have incredible inflation right now, but $10K is crazy.

The last 2 mokes that I stripped to a bare body I gave away. I didn't want to hear any bitching about they overpaid. Of course they didn't have vins either.

Reminiscent of the Mopar craze of the early 2000's where people were asking 50k for a similar cuss shell because the vin said at production it had a hemi.

Think it happened 3-4 years ago with broncos.  Some place in Cali was buying anything with a vin for 20k cause they were redoing them and selling for well over 100k.

SO many interesting cars and other things for sale on BaT today!

This cool little Italian minibike...   https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1970-fantic-broncco-tx7-2/ (https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1970-fantic-broncco-tx7-2/)

This bare bones, 29K mile, bottom of the line Corvair with a three speed manual gearbox! I thought they were all 4 speeds, I guess when you're buying the el cheepo version you only got three  https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1969-chevrolet-corvair-3/ (https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1969-chevrolet-corvair-3/)

This incredibly stylish moped!  https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1961-victoria-spoetnik-50cc/ (https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1961-victoria-spoetnik-50cc/)

This really cool 1946 ERCO   https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1946-ercoupe-415/ (https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1946-ercoupe-415/)

2 huge HMMV's, one on the east coast and one on the west

This gorgeous looking old (new) Indian Chief  https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2020-indian-chief-vintage/ (https://bringatrailer.com/listing/2020-indian-chief-vintage/)

An old McCormack Farmall Cub, and THIS - Kurt Bilinski's Midlana. 538 hp mid mounted Honda engine in a custom built state of the art chassis, total weight with driver about 1650lbs! Plus, if you want to build one for yourself, for $100 you can buy the book that details every step, every weld, every nut and bolt and all the design and engineering drawings so you can DIY a copy! I followed this build for years as I first found him when I saw his previous build, another Honda powered mid-engined car called Kimini, built with a carbon fiber classic Mini body.

This auction of classic cars in the UK just popped up on YouTube. And I spotted this altered Mini.

I really don't understand the appeal of these shorty modifications.   But neither does the market apparently - just bid to £4200.

Yes. This is sort of the opposite of the shorty Mini above.

A Mk I Mini limo.   And if you've ever wondered what a MG 1100 grille would look like on a Mini, here's your answer.

QuoteThis limousine was built for the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Mini at Goodwood, where it is said to have provided transport services for none other than Lord March himself – the owner of Goodwood and now styled as the Duke of Richmond.

With seating for five, plus the driver, this unique vehicle has been used as wedding transport and would make a great addition to any fleet of hire vehicles.

Anyone else notice that limo has functioning external hinges on roll-up window doors that normally use internal hinges?

The Mini limo was bid to £9600.  I wonder if someone is looking to actually drive it or display it?

That's a very rare Mini.   The only one I was aware that still existed was at the museum in Gaydon.

Not to be confused with the fiberglass Minis made in Venezuela a couple of decades later: the MiniCord.

Here's a umm, ahem, 1891 Mini, oops I mean a 1981 Mini for sale.  Ultra high price of just $160,000.  I'm sure it's here totally legally.  But you do have to wonder how the price was determined.

Clearly they did a lot of work to the car, and it appears to be well done......but 160k? If I am spending that kind of money on a car there are a lot of other options that would end up in my garage over a 1980's mini.

Assuming that's the correct number plate, M165 UAU, on that car, it's nowhere near a 1981 car.  MOT history says it's a 1995 car. Which could be legally imported of course since it's more than 25 years old. So why the BS about it being a 1981 car?

What it is, isn't.  Now on BaT, a pickup made from a Mini estate, but it appears to be done very well with what looks like genuine pickup sheet metal.  Shame about the sidemarker lights which never appeared on any pickup (or estate).
